Helping my son structure his GCSE revision

nathanmcgurl · 24/04/2017 09:49

My son is a fairly typical 16 year old. As such he'd found it really hard to be disciplined about revision (added to an ever growing list that also includes picking up after himself, putting empty glass into the dishwasher, etc!).

In a bid to encourage good studying behaviours ready for A-levels and beyond I've worked with him to create a nifty more engaging way of scheduling tasks. Its based on an agile project management style I use in my work. There's also a spreadsheet that helps track tasks.

I wanted to share my experience and wrote it up on my seldom-updated personal site. I can't promise that your own little darlings will suddenly become consciencious and study hard, but it has certainly helped mine get a bit more focused.

I know this is an old thread but Nathanmcgurl I need your revision schedule! And the link no longer works... My DD has just finished year 10 and whilst she is quite bright and cognitive ability tests have suggested her GCSE results should all be in the 7s and 8s, she is at least a couple of grades below this in all her subjects, mainly due to her being dyslexic, which causes her to have quite a disorganised approach to studying and revision. I would be really grateful if you could repost the link! Many thanks in advance.

I have to say we used a slightly adapted version of NathanMcGurl's revision spreadsheets. Results due on 23rd August but it definitely helped DS!

I read the thread with interest, and thought 'oh that sounded similar to how I helped DD1'. Then right at the end I clicked on the broken link, and saw the name. As an ex-SW developer I now realise where my methods came from. Smile

ReservoirDogs, or anyone else, is there any chance you can forward the revision schedules please??

Lavalamp12 · 29/07/2018 07:27

Yes I would be really interested to see them too. Gutted to see the link no longer works!

nathanmcgurl · 30/07/2018 12:27

@isanyoneoutthere @TeenTimesTwo @Lavalamp12 I am so sorry that the link was dead when you were looking for it. I had completely forgotten that I had even posted on here until I received a couple of direct messages.

I have decided to leave the corporate world and, based on feedback and enthusiasm, set this up as a venture - The Study Buddy. The method will always be free, that's really important to me. But to make it easier for parents I'll be producing the boards, GCSE sets and providing a digital tracker.

I'm building the new site right now www.thestudybuddy.com, but am happy to help with the system if you can't wait that long! Feel free to drop me a DM.

Hi Nathan,
That link doesn't seem to be working now. Any idea where I can find the report you mention?
Thanks

nathanmcgurl · 18/10/2018 23:43

hi @jamesthurber Sorry, you might have been caught between updates - I'm going to be rebuilding the site over the next few days. In the meantime you can find information on the site and, if you're interested, I am now doing an early bird offer (5%). You can show you're interested by visiting www.thestudybuddy.com/early-bird no obligation.

Alternatively feel free to drop me a msg here or [email protected]

Thanks

Nathan

Thanks
