Problems with my brother

my bro is predicted low gcses. he wanted to do a course at college to do electricals, but they were told 2day that theyre full so the options he has are part time courses or sixth form. it is doubtful he will get good enough grades for sixth form. there arent any other courses he is interested in. theres also the option of an apprenticeship but hes too lazy to do that. can anyone think of any options that he can take? otherwise itll be a year wasted

How about some form of foundation course which then leads on to the courses he likes?

Or there is GNVQ Foundation level (equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grade D-G, depending on whether you get a {Pass, Merit or Distinction) or Intermediate level (equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grades A-C).

What is his intentions for the future more medium term? What does he want to do job wise?

He could also do resits to improve his grades too.

Most of the options can be done at either sixth form or college.

sorry to hear this tammybear (nice sister for trying to help him btw), how does he feel he's done and would he mind re-doing them if need be?

Hulababy · 04/07/2004 23:16

Have a look here - BBc site, often has gone advice and option lists.

he has no prospects or anything. him and my other brother are really lazy, and are just going to college because they dont want to get jobs (plus mums forcing them too lol). its annoying because theyre just enthusiastic over anything unless its a new playstation game!

It is worthwhile him going to as he may well now get EMA money for staying on - money each week in his pocket. But this is dependent on meeting deadlines and attending lectures/lessons.

tammybear · 04/07/2004 23:53

yeah they were told about that, why couldnt they have done that whilst i was at college!!!

I know they didn't do it for me either The school I work at has had EMA for the past few years as we were part of the trials. It has worked well.

If he wants any further advce he could speak to the education/career advisors at his school and/or colleges locally.

If you know more about what he wants to do I can ask about too.

thanks hulababy, spoke to my mum yesterday about him, and she says that he really doesnt care and is thinking he gets to spend the next year doing nothing. so mum is now wanting to just put him in any course, because he is a lazy git and wont do anything. plus mum will be £200 down a month due to benefits, and shes struggling enough as it is. where would i be able to find out where other local colleges are?

TB - if you're bro is genuinely only intersted in Playstation games then what about a job in games testing?

There's a site here

I know how you feel about the waste of time. My brother left school at 17 with ok exams, but delivered pizzas for the last 8 years, whilst sponging off my mum and dad. When he finally got to college a couple of years ago, he decided not to sit his finals last month, cos his band had rehearsals!?!?!? He's 26!!!! grrrrrrrr
Lazy brothers!

tammybear · 07/07/2004 16:27

lol. i kept saying to him "if you did a course in computers, then in years to come you could become one of those people who work on playstation games". didnt take a blind bit of notice lol
