My dd starts school in sept and has just had her statement of special needs completed, our local council are giving her named school £11,200 a year to help towards the extra care she needs, and although this sounds alot of money surely thats not enough to pay for a one to one carer all day, i am also presuming that this money will need to be used to help towards providing a room for her to be changed in(she is still wearing nappies).I know the school has to spend the money on what her statement advises, and the school then decides how to spend the money, but can i have any influance on that desecion. I cannot beleive how much hard work it is physically and emotionally just to get the right care for a child who has special needs .Has anyone had any experiance of statements good or bad i would like to hear about them.

If our local authority gives the go-ahead, in September I will be working in a Primary school as a 'shadow' for an autistic child, with whom I have been working on a home-based programme.
I have recently attended the review for her statement, and I understand that the decision on how the money is spent to support the child's statement, rests with the head teacher and SENCO at the school.
This is a very important issue, as the school has no experience of the type of programme being run at home (ABA therapy) and therefore little understanding of the shadowing role. They see my role as being like a teaching assistant, but the parents are adamant that there are fundamental differences.
The pay for teaching support assistants in our area is less than £6 per hour (cleaners earn £7 per hour locally) so in fact £11000 would go quite a long way, but that doesn't allow for any special equipment your daughter might require.

mooma I know the school is being provided with a specially designed chair, and i believe that its being given to them by my dd ocupational therapy dept, her statement says that handrails(if not already in place)need to be in place at all steps and uneven ground so does this mean the money given to the school will have to pay for any adaptions to the school.

ariel - not sure but I think adapting the building comes from a different budget.
