Does anyone know what the exam involves, and what standard is required compared to the year 6 SATS. He got level 4's at the end of year 4 which was rare in his school

DS is easily distracted so may be better in like minded class.

Look at www.elevenplusexams.co.uk. (Sorry - tried to do a link but it didn't work!)

This is a superb website which should tell you everything you need to know. Information is provided area by area, and if you need to ask any questions there is a forum frequented by some very knowledgeable contributors.

Good luck and best regards

Where do you live? It's different in different places. If you live anywhere near me - Sittingbourne - I have recent relevant experience! I also recommend eleveplusecams.co.uk but with two warnings -it's very addictive, and there are also a lot of people on there who are hot housing their children towards full marks and it can be a bit dispiriting when they post their children's achievements!

elevenplusexams.co.uk even!

Thanks,

vr, nvr and maths don't sound too bad, it is the english that looks horrendus - can't imagine him sitting and redding books, perhaps give a try and not expect too much. Catchment school is quite good (ilford area)

Another useful site to look at is Chuckra. My son's headteacher recommended it. I'm surprised that everybody doesn't know about this site already because all the 11+ practice papers are free. My son's scores have improved from 60% to around 90% on nfer papers since doing the chuckra tests. They even have videos telling you how to do the verbal reasoning question types.

If you are going for an independent school, you should check the nature of the exam. Some are VR/NVR, some are Sats-style academic knowledge, and some a mixture of both.

A little know 11+ fact - children whop are very young for year (eg Aug birthdays) get awarded extra points.

If it's for Ilford County High, which I assume it is, then it's only VR and NVR that they sit. Redbridge 11 plus examinations are the hardest in the country, so they really are looking at a pass rate of 95%(yikes!)It is EXTREMELY competitive. You can't get past papers but NFER Nelson are closest to those set. The Redbridge LEA can fill you in on any additional info!

For 11 plus advice, take a look at the following site:

11 plus exams here

I found it when looking for help for my child. They passed! It covers the whole of the country and is frequented by 11 plus authors, teachers, governors, tutors and parents.

There is a very experienced lady called Etienne who was an ex appeal panel member, she gives fantasic advice on selection and transfer appeals.

I am hooked, one child in, 2 more to go.
