'Joint CSE and O Level' exams - desperately need info on these - can anyone remember them?

Am desperately trying to find some information on these exams - apparently they were introduced in the mid-80's for about 2 years (just before GCSE's came into existence) as a way of combining the CSE and O Level - the information I do have leads me to believe it was some kind of pilot scheme before GCSE's.
I need to find out, as they were graded by numbers rather than letters, whether a grade 3 was equivalent to a Grade C O Level or GCSE.
I cannot find any information on the Internet - they seem to have dropped into a black hole somewhere.
Can anyone help?? Please?? Or let me know where I might find the information.

I did the maths one in the last year but one before GCSEs came in. Got a certificate that said Grade B O level and Grade 1 CSE .

So I would say if someone did the combined exam and got a Grade 3 that's Grade 3 CSE, ie an O level fail (D and E were fails for O level, weren't they? You had to have a C to pass?)

And the fire alarm went off so with all the kerfuffle of waiting to see if we'd be allowed out or left to burn, and then having to go back in to have the 20 minutes we'd missed, I reckon I should have got an A!

for what's it worth, I agree with everyone who has posted

cse1 = O Level grade c or above
cse2 = O Level grade d
cse3 = O Level grade e

Am also a dinosaur

lol my school was too high brow to comtemplate letting their 'girls' take CSE's and subsequently I failed all my exams getting O'Level D's and E's.

I longed to have taken CSE's which would have given me 2's and 3's and sounded better than O'Level fails.....

I'm trying to get replacement O Level & CSE certificates...I can get my City & Guilds with no problems at all, yet trying to get these school standards is like trying to get blood out of a stone!...Nothing is coming up in the search engine...Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A level 1 is equivalent to an O level pass as well, which was then graded A - C

i did CSE....failed some!!

sayed in sixth form and did CEE,which was a cross between the 2 i was told

and i also did ordinary o level

but could it be the CEE?

scaryteacher · 28/09/2010 14:15

I did CEE (Certificate of Extended Education) maths and got a grade 2 which was an O level pass, hence I can teach.

I did one in RE in 1987. I got an O level grade A and a CSE grade 1 - two certificates for one exam.

TheFallenMadonna · 28/09/2010 19:57

Ha! Answered the OP only to find out it was from 3 years ago!!

Oh bugger, it is Grin. Did she get the job then?

LatteLady · 28/09/2010 22:01

Actually grading at O level depended on the Board which set the exams, for example I took mine in 1974 and the grades were A, C or E... all of which were passes followed by F or fail and U for ungraded.

They changed to ABC across the board post 1977.

thelastresort · 28/09/2010 22:37

I always thought 1975 was the first year that O levels were graded A - U (that's when I did mine).

C and above was regarded as a pass D - U (ungraded) a fail, (although I think the new grading system was brought in to suggest that no-one actually 'failed' and so you were given some credit for actually taking the exam etc etc .....:))

Certainly my sister who was 2 academic years ahead had her 0 levels graded 1 - 6(??? I think which were all passes.

CecilyP · 29/09/2010 09:52

Pre 1977, only London University Board used letter grades A, C an E pass grades, F an H fail. All the other examination boards used number grades. The other change was that all grades were put on certificates including fail grades. Prior to that you got your grade on an individual results slip but your certificate only listed your passes without grades.

And guess who sat University of London Boards? Wink
