schools in bath or bristol

HI there, I'm looking for a school with good SEN (either independent or state) - not too pushy academically but good schools, creative, good vibe where kids are happy. My son is high functioning autism (asperges's) but mild. Need a cary atmosphere for him.
Any recommendations (we're thinking of relocating asap as he in Year 5)

I would like someone to respond on this too, as it is of interest to me as well!

Sidcot is known for being caring

Monkton combe in Bath is excellent pastoral-care wise. You'd need to chat to them about any extra support your son would need x

The Oasis school in Bridlington has a specialist ASD centre. Don't know if it's any good though as we moved away from the area 5 yrs ago when it was still a LEA school.

Brislington! Stupid phone!!

I've heard good things about Abbeywood school for ASD children. Think they have a hub where children can go if they need time out of mainstream, can go at lunchtime or even have lessons there sometimes. I have a friend who's son is autistic and they are trying for the new special school called pegasus, being opened on the Patchway site. It is mainstream education in a specialist environment, so suits high functioning children who will access the curriculum with the right environment. Think you need an ECHP to be eligible for that school. I do know of a bright boy with aspergers who is at QEH in Bristol. He is doing very well, but very mild, and School is quite academic and expects a lot.

Claremont school in Henleaze

Try the Downs School in Wraxall. Very inclusive, caring and on site therapists can be arranged

Although no longer in special measures, Oasis Brislington is a recent academy converter that had to become an academy due to being rated as inadequate. I wouldn't describe it as being a "good" school.
As far as I know they no longer have specialist ASD provision.

Agree with Cats. I wouldn't describe Oasis Brislington as a good school. Know someone who took their son out of the school had had severe autism and is now going to a special school.

Have personally moved out of Brislington as don't want my dc going to that school.

Agree with pp. I have heard good things about THe Downs being nurturing too but they do only go up to 13, again I have heard same about support at QEH. Both are fee paying.

Aaargh, wrote really long message and lost it. Yes to Monkton Combe (fee paying) and possibly Beechen Cliff (state). Not King Edward's probably.

So, is Oasis Brislington a better school now it's an academy, or should it still be avoided?

A bit too early to say Bookridden. They haven't, as far as I know, had a full OFSTED inspection since they became an academy. There was a significant improvement in GCSE results in 2016 though.

Hello - not relevant for your ds as is a girls school but Westonbirt is worth a look as excellent SEN and caring, happy environment attended by girls from both Bath and Bristol areas.

ps maybe also post this on the SEN section of Education as sure to get some good advice from there - good luck :-)

Kingswood used to be...there is a school down in Somerset called apple something that is dyslexia focused. Both fee paying I think.
