Tutor / explore learning

My daughter is in year five and needs help with maths, I have put her into explore learning but it's very costly £145 per month and we find it difficult to attend the two classes every week I'm not sure if it's worth it.

I'm wondering if a tutor would be better and what's the best way to find a good one? I think she would do better with one on one help.

We tried Explore last summer for my grandson who was struggling with both literacy and numeracy. We gave it up when winter started, because travelling to the centre through a city centre was too much after school and I felt he was just working on a computer which I could do with him. One advantage not mentioned is that my daughter as a single parent could claim most of the fees back as it is Ofsted registered.

One year on his reading is much improved so this summer he had a private tutor for maths which did help over the summer months. Since then, I have been working through the CGP books with him and he is having extra help at school and we are seeing improvements.

I definitely think a 1-1 tutor is best or, as someone else said, a tutor with 2 children. That also sets up a bit of competition between the children.

One thing I would say from our experience is that a child struggling at school is probably quite stressed at the end of the day. They can find the whole school day more tiring than the other children. When he comes to me, we always walk the dog and have a snack before we start any work and I find his most responsive time is Sat and Sun mornings for an hour each.

Finally, the best thing this term, is that his school have started giving us clues about what area to help him with, for instance this week we are concentrating on counting coins up to 10p.

Hi OP,

Have yoi considered asking any of the teachers at your daughters school if they do tutoring? In our school the teachers happily tutor children for a fee (usually more reasonably priced than internet tutors). An individual tutor can work with your child in the areas that they struggle with such as fractions etc.

I've found the 1-2-1 tutor gave us the most success and my DC have made fantastic progress. Our tutor sometimes sets homework but not always, depends whether it is necessary.
