My son did not get good results in GCSC, he got C in 5 subjects including maths and English. Colleges refused to accept him for A levels, They suggested a BETC level 3 Business studies course. I am not happy about it, can you please advise me what to do.

There is nothing wrong with BTECs as they are another route to go to university.. that is if your son wants to take that route. The more important question to ask is that what does he want to do when as a career and will BTEC Business aurally help him in achieving this... may it be going into work or going on to university?

You say he wants to do a Law Degree. This may seem very harsh but the reality is if he intends to do a law degree to become either a solicitor or a barrister it is unlikely that this will happen with only 5 C grades at GCSE unless he qualifies by going the legal executive route.

Most firms offering training contracts will be looking for 2.1 degrees from an RG uni and competition is so fierce that they will then look at A levels and GCSE grades too.

If however he wants to do a law degree merely because he is interested in it as a subject then that is a different matter.

There does need to be an element of managing expectations (of child and parent). This comes from a (solicitor) parent of a child who was keen of being a doctor but was only ever likely to get 3 Bs at A levels rather than the A*AA needed for medicine. Again sorry if this comes across as harsh or blunt but there are many other options which can be explored.

My suggestion would be for your son to discuss the matter fully with tutors on return to college.
