What's the best way to find a tutor?

We live in an area that doesn't have a big tutoring culture (at least as far as I know) because there's no 11-plus here. No one I know is using a tutor, and at least one person has tried and failed to find one.

Basic internet searching hasn't brought up anything other than directories with no one local on them. So what's the best way of a good one for a ten year old? Any thoughts gratefully received.

Have you tried first tutors.
When I was looking for tutees that's where I registered.
Depending on the subject area you could try online tutoring if there is no one area.

I'm a tutor (English and entrance exams). I have a website but the vast majority of my clients come through personal recommendations or websites like First Tutors. Don't be put off if you can't find anyone local-I do a lot of my tutoring via Skype.

No worries at all. First Tutors is a good site-I would say look for people who've got lots of good reviews on there.

Possibly not so much for 11+, but for GCSE and A level, we have used an online service called MyTutor. It's all online, which works for us in rural Cornwall as it gives us access to uni undergraduates in the subjects we need across the country. You register, look at the tutors, make an educated guess at who they might like (DS did not want a female) and have a Skype type chat, free, for 15 minutes, then pick. You load a wallet with cash, which is drawn down as you have tutorials. (About 20-25 per hour). And you can replay the tutorial sessions if you want. There's an interactive "whiteboard" that student and tutor both use in between. You do need decent broadband though. I think they have tutors who do 11+.

I advertise my services through Tutor Hunt. Looks pretty good.

Do you have any friends that teach? They may have colleagues who are able to tutor. We tried asking DS's school for recommendations when we were looking for a maths tutor but didn't get any response but it may be worth a try if your school is more helpful/interested!
