is it a positive transition to turn a school into an academy?

DD's primary school is possibly going to be made into an academy.

I don't know much about the consequences of changing, and would like to know if those of you with experience have found this a positive or negative experience and why,

There are as many negative as positive answers as you wish for this, it really does depend on the individual school situation.
If this is a forced academisation then the school is already in trouble so whilst there might be a lot of change to start with, the odds are on the school improving.
If it is the school themselves deciding to be what is called a converter academy then they will be joining or forming a MAT (multiacademy trust) which is where a number of schools get together formally to work with each other. That can be a bit hit or miss and a question that needs to be asked is what does the school loose in terms of autonomy and in terms of local communication etc.

Indeed, some LEA's are good, others are poor, just in the same way that some academies are good, others are poor. All have to abide by the law of the land, i.e. the core framework in which they operate.
