would you say anything? feeling embarrassed about DS bragging

DS came out of school today beaming as he 'is now on books'. He was with one of his friends who is not at that stage yet. I wanted to praise my DS as he has been looking forward to books for a long time, but didnt want to make a thing about it in front of his friend and his mum (as I know she would like her son to be further on).

I thought about saying something tomorrow alonmg the lines of 'Sorry my ds was bragging, your ds will get there soon'. But then I thought I should just ignore it and let it pass. She might not have really registered it. I just felt very sensitive towards her and her DS.

i wouldnt say a thing to the other parent about and praise your own son.

i wouldn't comment on it to the other mum - just let it pass. it's right to praise ds but i'd keep it low-key in front of pals and save the really excited praise for home.

Agree with misdee. He wasn't 'bragging', it was his natural and justified pride in his achievement.

thanks you two that is what I thought I would do, but I am just feeling sorry that my db was 'braggin' in front of hers, and he may be upset. (My DS has been upset by anotehr child over someting totally different so I know how much their feeligs can be hurt at this age.)

foudintranslation you are right. I am new to this school parenting lark, so I guess I ahve a lot to learn when it comes to achievements etc...

is it bragging? how old is he?

IAmLost · 17/01/2007 19:37

maybe I used the wrong word. He wouldnt understand what bragging was. foundintranslation is right, it was pride, taht's all.

no I woudln't say anything to her tbh , but do praise him , when you have an opportunity away from his friends. You did right playing it down a little in front of them. For him it is just a milestone of which he is rightly proud.

I wouldn't say anything to the other mum or child, but I would praise my own child when they came out and told me. I don't think at this age - I am assuming reception here? - know what bragging is really. DD's is a little ahead of her friend, and they know who is on what book, but neither seem concerned or interested in the others stage of reading at all at this stage (also reception age).

IAmLost · 17/01/2007 19:55

you are all right - think I am just been oversensitive. (I just know what it is like to be on the end of others' insensitivity so I am trying not to be like that myself!)

Congratulations to your ds on getting books - it is so nice to curl up on the sofa and let them read to you.

I agree with the others - praise your ds for his achievement but not say much to the other mother.

OTOH you may find she is pleased for you that your son has achieved this milestone, both as a true friend would and aslo in the hopes that it may spur her son on the reach it too.
