Can anyone help with Latin Homework Please?

DS has one question left (I have never done any Latin so NO use).

The Q is "What happened when P called to her friends"

The passage is:
Ehue! ubi nunc sunt P amicae? puella amicas vocavit - sed frustra. lacrimavit et tunicam laceravit - sed frustra.

He knows the last sentace is something about "she wept and toga, she wept - but in vein" He wondered about ON the toga but there is no 'preposition'

P = Proserpina (name - daughter of Ceres)

I am going out for a bit so not ignoring anyone - will check later.

TIA

vein may be vain?

WeaselMum · 12/01/2007 18:04

i would guess that "laceravit" would be "tore"

LIZS · 12/01/2007 18:04

Long time since I did it but couldn't "laceravit" mean "tore" (as in lacerate) with "tunicam" being the object ?

foxinsocks · 12/01/2007 18:04

laceravit - is tearing isn't it? as in lacerate

babster · 12/01/2007 18:05

She wept and ripped her toga - but in vain

NAB3 · 12/01/2007 18:05

in which case I am probably wrong. sorry.

Milliways · 12/01/2007 18:05

Sorry - that was a typo - meant wept in Vain!

Alas. Where are P's friends? The girl calls to her friends. She cries and tares at her tunic, but in vain.

MrsBadger · 12/01/2007 18:06

the whole translation goes:

Alas! Where are Proserpina's friends now? The girl called her friends - but in vain. She wept and tore her tunic - but in vain.

So basically she called her friends but they didn't answer.

Milliways · 12/01/2007 18:07

Wow - that is really helpful - & fast!

Lacrimo = weep
Lacrima = tear
lacero = tear to pieces

Know nothing about tenses!

MrsBadger · 12/01/2007 18:07

(NB vocavit is perfect isn't it? If it was 'she calls her friends' wouldn't it be present ie vocat, lacrimat, lacerat)

Blandmum · 12/01/2007 18:08

Oh how one mourns the passing of the clasical world.

Now it would read.

P phoned her mates on her mobile, but they were out, 'Am I bovvered?' she said.

tamum · 12/01/2007 18:08

She's a bit of a drama queen, isn't she?

Milliways · 12/01/2007 18:08

Fantastic mb

MrsBadger · 12/01/2007 18:10

I did four years of Latin at school - it was a laugh, I found it pretty easy as it was so logical and we got to go on a field trip to Italy - where's the bad?

I don't use it much now except when medical terms come up at work and I can have a stab from their derivations.

MordecaiAliVanAllenOShea · 12/01/2007 18:12

Ahem - degree in Latin & greek [blush. This has been the only useful application of it though. And I think I got the tense wrong!!

LIZS · 12/01/2007 18:20

lol mb !

4 years , Cambridge Latin Course - "Caecilius est in atrio" anyone ? ds starts it next year so hope it floods back!

MrsBadger · 12/01/2007 18:23

surely it's Metalla in atrio? Caecilius est in foro

KathyMCMLXXII · 12/01/2007 18:24

Isn't she being raped by Pluto at this point? If so I think she's entitled to do a bit of weeping and tunic-tearing.

tamum · 12/01/2007 18:32

Ah, that makes sense then Kathy. Sorry I was so harsh on her!

RTKangaMummy · 12/01/2007 19:57

LIZS my DS is using the Cambridge Latin Course book this year. {He wants me to wish your DS good luck for next year}

He translated it as:

Oh dear where are Proserpina's friends now? The girl called her friends - but in vain. She wept and tore her tunic.

I hope I have typed it correctly, he was dictating the answer to me

Which book is your DS using Milliways?

Milliways · 12/01/2007 21:37

Hi RTKM - seems funny thinking about all those awaiting their 11+ results again - was it really 1 year ago??

He is using "So you really want to Learn Latin - Book 1".

His Latin teacher is his fav teacher - they get to have battles etc in class & he makes it really fun. TBH he finds it easier than French.

Thanks for all your help everyone.

Milliways, I'm you're involving yourself in this. I've told my DS1 he's on his own with his homework, particularly German and DT (my and DH's particular spheres of ignorance). Nice that your son's enjoying Latin though - so's mine .

RTKangaMummy · 14/01/2007 13:17

Yes I know what you mean about 11+

When DH went to invigulate the 11+ exams last week we were asking DS if he wanted to go and take them again

He declined

He loves LATIN too - and yes more than french too.
