For those in the throes of the 11+

Anyone's child taking the papers today and tomorrow? How did they feel about today's papers?

DS2 did verbal and non-verbal reasoning today. He loves non-verbal reasoning (strange child) and was quite comfortable with the paper. He said he had to guess some of the questions on the verbal and was unsure of a couple which he tried to work out. He seems quite happy with his efforts - which may or may not be good!

Maths tomorrow.

How long till you get the results?

DS took his 11+ last year but they sit it in November here.

Good luck

The results are sent to the school (parents are not told). The first we know is when we receive a letter sent on 1st March indicating which school our child has been offered. If you completed your application online, you can check on 1st March, but otherwise have to wait until you receive the letter.

By that I mean that the results are sent to the school sometime before parents are informed. This is so that, should any child's result be unexpected, the school can formulate an appeal prior to the allocations being sent out.

Our area is March 1st as well, seems ages since November! At least you won't have too long to wait.

Taking papers on different days? Does that make the stress better or worse than doing it all on one day? DS had to do Maths, Engish, an essay and VR (could have been either VR or NVR, didn't find out until the day)

Does your DS have a good choice of schools?

Freckle · 09/01/2007 22:38

Gosh, I'd hate to have to wait from November! I think the wait until March is long enough.

I think it's better to take the papers over 2 days. Otherwise the ones taken last might suffer as the poor child suffers exam overload!

We are lucky in that we have very good schools here. DS1 is at a grammar just a 10 minute walk from home (this is the one DS2 wants to attend). There is another about a 30-40 minute walk, but it's unlikely we'd be offered that one as we fit the admissions criteria for the closer one so would probably be offered that. The local high school is also excellent, so we don't have too many worries if DS2 should fail (not that he will of course!).

I was told today by one of the other mums that the head (new to the school) is going to tell parents the result of the 11+ at the end of this month. I think the schools are told next week, but parents don't normally find out until they receive the letter allocating school places on 2nd or 3rd March. So hopefully won't have an extra 4 weeks to wait to find out the result.

I'm surprised by that as schools initially have the opportunity to appeal before we know about it (I know you know this Freckle being anold hand like me). I'm so bothered this time round, even though dd2 is v bright. He'd get in trouble for doing it. I hate this bit so much!

Freckle · 13/01/2007 08:55

I understand that the schools receive the results next week, so presumably would sort out any appeals then. If they then let parents known at the end of the month, I don't see what the problem is.

I've always thought it unfair that your child takes an exam, the results are available the following week, but parents are made to wait another 5 weeks to find out.

ours is november to march
farkign terrible

Freckle · 13/01/2007 09:14

Maybe we should take the authorities to the European Court of Human Rights and claim that it is an abuse of our human rights to force us to wait for results which are available and known to schools. Why can't we just be told the results and then get the school allocation letter along with everyone else??
