I'm curious as to how far we are from the school we've applied to. There are differing opinion's as to what the catchment area is and we have another 2 weeks to find out eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek.

It depends on your local authority & it may not go on distance - in our LA we have three schools very close to each other & the catchment areas are not really distance related at all

Not a calculator as such, but the ofsted site will tell you how far you are from various schools based on postcode.

Where are you- I know Cheshire has an online catchment area map so i don't see why other LEAs might not.

May not have a cathcnment as such - our school takes children with SEN, siblings, and then those who live closest to the school. This is in London, and a popular school with more applications than places: I suppose technically the catchment is 'children living in the boro' - in reality you have to live pretty locally to get in. School / LA will publish criteria on how places are allocated tho so check the council website. Good luck getting in!

Hi there,

I agree with Sinclair. Where we live (also Greater London) there is no catchment area as such, or it varies every year, depending on how many people live closer to the school (have older children in, special ed. needs etc.).

In our case it meant that we didn't get our child into the school that was 500m away, despite the fact that I saw children in that uniform walking past our house. It was just that in my child's year the class had been filled with 27 siblings and the 3 other children lived closer to the school than we did. In previous years there had been fewer siblings, fewer applications etc.

Bad luck but in a way it's logical. What's the school supposed to do if there are just too many applications even when they're from the catchment area? Good luck to you anyway.

I am not sure they will because it depends upon many factors - such as siblings and also how many children were born in that year in your area.

in our LEA (Southampton) you have to phone and ask - I guess because the catchment might change from year to year as the others have said. It's certainly doesn't seem to be done on distance round here - our nearest school is not our catchment shcool!

Also meant to say but pressed post to eaarly. If you phone the school they may give you an idea of how likely you will be to get in.

If its just distance from the school you are looking for try upmystreet.com - put in your postcode and it will tell you how far you are from the nearest schools.
