Home-ed Thread made me wonder. I don't remember any inspirational teachers from my school days -- not one. Some were kind, some were dull, many I can't remember. None gave me a love of learning or stood out.

Just wondered how unusual that is...

(ps
Only remember one truly exceptional lecturer from University -- lecture theatre was always overflowing.)

Mr Pete(if I remember correctly) Atkinson he taught Humanities and was great, really knew how to get you working unfortunately I didnt have him in my final years instead had a teacher who would set work and then mark his books from his previous lesson or read the paper!

Mrs Harvey- she was a Maths teacher and really had a knack of making you beleive you could do it and if you werent getting it right she was always so patient and kind, again didnt have her in last 2 years had a teacher called Mrs Hillier who had BO(sorry but she did) no-one ever understood her explanations and we hated her coming over to our desk because of the smell. As a failing class we complained but nothing was done until we left!! She told us all we were thick and couldnt do maths!!!!!

My junior school history teacher, Pete Asquith-Cowan.

He was fantastic - although a little crazy

He loved dressing up and bringing everything to life, making it feel like you were real witnesses to historical events. He hid in cupboards too and jumped out to scare the shit out of his students

He instilled in me a real love of history, literature and books.

He was always very camp and rumours were rife and I know life was sometimes a bit hard on him because of it.

I met him again last year, 30+ years on. It turns out he is 'the only gay in the village' that DH hails from and he has always been the object of ridicule for some bigots there. He was despondent and honestly thought he had failed in life.

I told him how much he had inspired me and in turn my sons as I have passed on all that he taught me. He cried but hugged me so hard and went away with the biggest smile on his face.

He was a massive influence on me as well I glad u told him that he was amazing man truly inspirational to me

Cor, not been here for years, only here now because I had an email saying someone had quoted an old post!

So sad to hear Pete has died recently. Only seen him a couple of times over the last few years, including once in a wonderful video for a local drama group where he was camping it up in great style.
A lovely man who will be truly missed.
