Hi booked a holiday end of april beginning of may forgetting about sats!

Does anyone know when they are, do all schools do them on same dates?

Obviously if they are on holiday dates can't go and dss will be gutted as have already told the kids about it and are going as a big family group so can't really change the dates of it.

Any teachers out there or knowledgable parnets who can help?

It is usually May!

JanH · 27/12/2006 16:09

Y9 (KS3) are 2nd week of May, if that helps.

ParanoidSurreyHousewife · 27/12/2006 16:12

14th-18th May 2007, but even if you are not going to miss SATS week they'll be missing a revision week. Good luck when making your request to the head!

KaySamuels · 27/12/2006 16:30

paranoid are those dates the same for all schools then? [she says clinging to last glimmer of hope!]

Would not even be making a request as its up to dss's mum and she has already said can't go if it will interfere with sats which is understandable.

I believe that it is the same dates for all schools in England, otherwise would be rather easy to cheat?

Isn't it up to the head re giving permission?

KaySamuels · 27/12/2006 16:47

The school doesn't have a website charliecat thanks for the idea tho.

Well yes it is up to head but if head says yes and mum says no still won't be coming!

All sats are sat on the same date through the whole country, it is to test where each child is at the same time. Sorry, I know you don't want to hear that....

Having said that Ds had flu when he was due to sit sats at end KS2 and it made no difference to anything at senior school.

As a teacher I regard most sats as complete waste of time and so do most other teachers. Something on the news only today about changing them as they don't prove anything.

They are really only used for number crunchers to predict GCSE results, but are often way off, as don't take into account that children mature at different rates.

You may not get permission to take dss out of school at that time, which will then be classes as unlawful absence however.

Hope this helps, but it really isn't the end of the world if dss doesn't take them. If he is in Year 6 most senior schools retest them with another type of test early in Year 7, and these are the ones which are mainly used for stats and not stats. If in Year 9 most teachers have a very clear idea about pupils level and ability.

fizzbuzz · 27/12/2006 16:51

Sorry...didn't check message, part of message at end which says these are really used for stats and not stats, should of course read....
these are really used for stats and not SATS!!!.

Duh!..dd had me up all night....

ParanoidSurreyHousewife · 27/12/2006 16:54

Several of our local senior schools allocate Year 7 sets/classes on the basis of SATS though one or two retest especially in science. But where the local schools use formula when weighing up whether to authorise absence or not the month prior to SATS scores pretty highly. I agree that they're pretty useless, but I guess you need to know how important they are to your expected choice of senior school.

fizzbuzz · 27/12/2006 17:00

If there are no sats results available for KS2, then senior school will request a teacher assessment from junior school, and child will be setted accordingly, but most senior school now do test called cats with Y7 in about 2nd or 3rd week into first term.

cece · 27/12/2006 17:05

I am also a teacher and tbh I would happily take my dc out of school for SATs if I could. Thye are a waste of time and purely for stats and number crunchy as fizzbuzz has already said.

Don't worry about. A holiday is more important in my opinion. Hopefully the SATs are on their way out anyway...

fizzbuzz · 27/12/2006 17:07

Also am not sure about this, because I don't teach a subject that is setted, but I think most children are setted in transfer from junior to secondary by teacher assessment.

Sats results don't come out until last week of term, and it would be impossible to do whole school timetable without knowing how many different classes and sets ther are, and timetable is usually done by Whitsun.

Also year before last LEA were unable to get SATS results of incoming Y7's before end of term, so don't know what happened to setting then.

God have really rambled on and on here, but hope it has helped

ParanoidSurreyHousewife · 27/12/2006 17:07

Are you happy for your pupils to miss SATS then - most teachers that I know seem aggrieved when it happens (even though they hate them themselves).

KaySamuels · 27/12/2006 17:07

ho hum, thanks for all of your replies..

If it were my decision I would take him out as I also agree that sats are useless, as any competent teacher would know a child's progress and level of ability anyway, dss is top of his class, very bright and mature. However due to dp's difficult relationship with his ex I can see her not budging on this one.

It is looking like dss won't be able to come, which is a real shame as he could do with some quality time with his dad at the mo,and will feel very excluded as all his cousins are also going. Gutted for him and dp tbh.

OP posts:
cece · 27/12/2006 17:08

If he is top of the class then the school will be gutted if he isn't there to bump up their stats!! LOL

KaySamuels · 27/12/2006 17:14

W e are away mon 30th April - Friday 4th May so would be missing revision only.

fizzbuzz · 27/12/2006 17:41

Poor dss, feel a holiday would be much more beneficial to him than miserable sats. As I said my ds was ill, but had my doubts about him taking them anyway. So luckily the decision was taken out of my hands.

At the moment kids are tested to death practically every year, and complete waste of time imo.

cece · 27/12/2006 18:02
