DD taking her 11 plus tomorrow...

She's only 10, not 11 till February. She's being doing really well with her practice papers and with her Tutor, so fingers crossed. She doesn't seem at all nervous, so that's good. I think I'm more nervous than her, and think I'll be feeling sick in the morning.

Wish her luck everyone!

3 exams!! My God!! I think dd would go spare if she had to do three! So did you get into one of the schools, Quootie?

PennySweets · 25/11/2006 08:34

Well done you, cleverclogs! So did you then choose the one you wanted most?

She's gone off this morning, my DD to the exam, cool as a cucumber.

Hope it goes well! Dd has an exam for a local comprehensive (!)this afternoon - even the drop off instructions look quite stressful to me! Our 11 plus isn't till Jan.

LadyMuck · 25/11/2006 09:52

Oh good luck. Must be so stressful!

curlew · 25/11/2006 09:55

Oh I do hope she does well, PennySweets. I do think it's mean they have to do these exams when they're so young! My dd does hers in January so we've still got weeks of practice papers in front of us

Judy1234 · 25/11/2006 14:00

Good luck. I always tried to play it down - just a few little tests at a few schools to see who is right for where and it doesn't matter at all. It is often the transference of parental anxiety on to the child that causes the most problems.

QuootiepiesBetterThanMincePies · 25/11/2006 17:54

Hope it went well xxx

Yes, well, we had them in order anyway, so got into 1st choice

PennySweets · 25/11/2006 20:08

Hi all, yes it went fine, thanks. She felt confident about the maths paper and the English comprehension and the English essay, the only snag was that in the verbal reasoning, she came across some things, codes mainly, that she hadn't covered with her tutor. I'm a bit annoyed, as the tutor should know exactly what might come up. One of dd's friends who was also sitting the exam has a different tutor, and she has taught dd's friend about the codes. Anyway, dd said that some of the Verbal Reasoning she knew, and what she didn't she guesssed, so she's still got a one in five chance of getting those answers (or some of them) right, as it's multiple choice. On the whole, she did well, and even if she fails the VR she can still get in to the school, as they can on 3 out of 4 papers. Oh well, it's all over now after months of stress, speculation and anxiety. If she doesn't make it to the grammar school, she'll go to a very good Catholic comprehensive.

Swedishmum, how did your dd get on? I haven't heard of a test for a comprehensive before. Good luck to your dd, Curlew, you do get fed up of those practice papers, don't you?

Sounds like she did well

swedishmum · 27/11/2006 08:09

Glad it went well PennySweets. My dd was fine - there was a little gang from her school. It was quite easy apparently, lots easier than 11 plus. They take the top 20% on ability then look at other criteria (distance etc) - this from the head who despises the grammar system! They have great facilities and apart from grammar (our 1st choice) there aren't many other schools I'd seriously consider round here.

When do you find out? It's March 1st round here.

PennySweets · 27/11/2006 14:05

Yes, same here. I'm not going to fret from now until March though. I know what you mean about the grammar system. We've had a right debacle here, as my three are at a good Catholic primary, which is feeder into a very good Catholic secondary. They, as well as the grammar, only take 1st choice applications. We didn't put grammar as first choice as dd was very 'flaky' for months about doing the test papers, on top of all the homework, it's such a lot for them. So we felt that we had to secure her place at the Catholic secondary, as the other secondaries in our area are dire. If she passes the 11 plus, she'll go on the waiting list for grammar, and hopefully will be offered a place before the start of term in September 07. We've known this to happen before. Otherwise, she'll stay on the list, and when a place comes up, we will assess whether it is a good time to move her, depending on how long she's been at secondary, how she's doing there, whether she likes it etc. It's all such a minefield. It's not like this with primary, is it?
