absolutely love living here. it's so great with the children. i have been waxing lyrical on the hackney thread!

controlfreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaky2 · 02/11/2006 22:03

me too. love the huge choice of things to go, the fact you can eat turkish or vietmanese food at drop of a hat, the ease of getting around on buses, lots of intelligent interesting people and and and....

I thought I heard the sound of somebody taking my virtual name in vain.

Which school are you going for? We did have a tutor for dd1 but not specifically for secondary entrance, more to make up for deficiencies in what was going on in her primary school. Depending on which school you're going for, a lot of the prep for VR and NVR you can do yourself -- the main problem is likely to be the maths, where even the state school entrance exams do go signficantly beyond the requirements of the primary school curriculum.

If you still feel you do want a tutor, we went through Gabbitas, which was v. straightforward, but I did have the impression that most of their people were ex-prep school staff, and possibly more geared up for preparing people for private school entrance, which do have rather different requirements from the state school entrance.

If you want more info, do feel free to CAT me.

controlfreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaky2 · 02/11/2006 22:10

many thanks frogs. will look into gabbitas. may well CAT you. how old was dd1 when you did this? did it help? am aiming for private school entrance at 11+ (ds's school mixed but ends at 11).. wheras most boys do 13 age entry... am trying hard to stay v calm

For private school entrance I would say you def. need tutor to give your child a level playing field. The essay-writing in particular goes way, way, beyond anything a state-educated child will have encountered.

We started when dd1 was in Y4 iirc, after I happened to catch a glance at her English exercise book and very, very didn't like what I saw.

The particular tutor we had was great, but def. not everybody's cup of tea quite fierce, old-style former prep school deputy but she really took to my stroppy dd1, and dd1 rather took to her, once the novelty of somebody actually criticising her work constructively had worn off. Yes, it did really help, inasmuch as she learnt to write a mean essay, and did a whole load of more advanced maths. But in fairness she had been climbing the walls in boredom in her primary class, so she was more than up for the challenge.

Do CAT me if you want details -- anecdotally there does seem to be a difference between the tutoring required for private entrance and that for state schools.

Posey · 03/11/2006 17:54

Got that number for you. Do you want to CAT me?
Friend who gave it to me says she does all sorts, both private and state school entrance exam stuff and general tutoring. Is also very popular so get in quick!

Approach the secondary schools. Teachers often want the extra income from coaching. The Blairs' sons were coached by teachers from Westminster School.

controlfreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaky2 · 05/11/2006 20:11

frogs and posey have CATed you both. tia.
