midwifery as mature student?

Has anyone out there trained as a Midwife as a mature student? Well I don't feel that mature, am 28 but know that is Old Crone's-ville in education terms
My questions are:

  1. Do you think the universities are inclined to consider applications from mature students?
  2. Does being a mum yourself wash in the slightest in terms of dealing with babies/birth etc or should I be trying to organise work experience?
  3. I have a degree but in an arts subject and A level biology and chemistry. do you think this is a scientific enough background? (i like to think that that midwifery is both an art and a science!)
cheers

Bumping this for you, Basilbrush, as I'm sure there will be someone on MN who can answer your questions.

FWIW when my dd was born we had a student midwife with us and she said that most of the people on her course were actually mature students (she was herself) so I am absolutely certain the answer to your first question would be yes!

Most people who do midwifery are mature students. They tend to look at when you last studied as well as your qualifications I got into nursing with an arts degree and an A'Level in biology but I did them very recently if its been a while you might need to do the acsess course.
I would recommend getting work experience just to see if its for you really!

Its prob best to contact the uni you want to apply tou for some answers.
