New School Sixth Form

HelloEverybody · 24/03/2015 17:32

My DD is currently in year 10, and really wants to change school for sixth form entry. She has been attending her current school for many years and many of her friends have moved. She finds her current environment under stimulating.
She is bright but not overly academic (in sciences, that is). Very interested in Art subjects (history, drama, literature, foreign languages) and have been practising drama for many years (following LAMDA now). She does not have musical abilities.
I wonder if anybody could recommend senior schools with good reputation and an all rounded focus. We've been thinking of Ibstock and Alleyn's but limited beyond those two potential options.
Many thanks!

Graveney has a very large sixth form and broad curriculum - she'd definitely find plenty of like-minded people there

Alleyn's is a great school but although it takes some children into Y12 it doesn't have as big a new intake as Graveney so not sure how easy it is to integrate as a newcomer

basildonbond, many thanks! Graveney is on our doorstep & impressive results. Only concerned about its size, but definitely will keep in my list of schools to enquire about.

Latymer was traditionally a good option for it's expanded sixth form but it is competitive to get into now especially from the private sector so unless predicted 10 A* probably not a contender?

Are you on the train line for Kingston Grammar School. It takes around 30 into the sixth form, so enough not to have problems with established friendship groups. A bigger sixth form means more stimulating tutor groups especially for arts subjects where it is good to get the ideas and discussion flowing, the last set of A level results at Ibstock were around the level of KGS but with a smaller cohort. More personal attention but not the best preparation for university. Personally I would rate the sixth form at KGS much more highly than Ibstock for both educational excellence and the all round experience. Squashed campus and no lovely flowers in Reception though Wink but the new wing has a theatre and sixth form facilities.

Admission to KGS is via interview and school reference. Latymer they sift for interview on an application form where they have to spend hours composing a sales pitch for themselves that never gets read unless they have the A* predictions outline what they will contribute to the school.

Richmond Borough Schools have newly opened sixth forms along that train line, Richmond Park Academy (on the up), Orleans Park...... I am sure the first cohorts will get lots of focus as they have something to prove, especially at RPA.

Poisonwoodlife, thank you for your comments. I've considered Latimer and have a friend with kids studying there. I think DD would be borderline to get into in Year 12, as school very academic. Also although she is definitely bright, she would rather benefit from an all rounded focus.
Will be looking into KGS. Also considering Francis Holland. Read mixed reviews about it. Looks like a school with very good ethos and girls grounded and happy, but notice they don't publish their detailed A level/GCSEs results, which i found a bit surprising. I read the one in Holland Park has a more established reputation than one in Chelsea. Anyone has had any experience with them ? Many thanks
