Not long to go now.... DS getting very excited and impatient for both the W induction and the Lake Garda trip... In fact he's been pretty unbearable!

Hope everyone else's DS has been more patient than mine...

My ds is starting W next week and I wondered what he should bring on the 1st day with him? All the sports kit or just rucksack and pencil case?? Just thinking of his 1st journey on the train..
He didn't get a timetable at the induction, did anyone?
Thx

If my memory serves me well..... take the lot, especially the sports stuff. It took a while to get the timetable, I remember being desperate to get my hands on it. They did tend to move things around sports wise in the first few weeks so boys may have been told it was to be in the sports hall next week but then be out on the rugby pitch. It was a bit of pain as DS was on public transport with heavy bags but things did settle down eventually.

Firefox1066 · 01/09/2015 10:58

My DS starts tomorrow in Lower First. He didn't get a timetable (just got a Blue exercise Book, School Rules, Michaelmas Term Diary and a Planner).

I wasn't sure whether to take Sports Kit tomorrow as I'd be surprised if they were going to do Games/PE and not tell parents in advance. I'll have a look at previous years threads and see what happened.

Was wondering the same about the sports kit. Guess I will send him with the lot tomorrow on public transport. Really hoping it gets into a routine soon though as that is a lot of kit to be carrying.
Does anyone know if the sports kit can be left at school? From what DS has said the locker they have is for their school books and it wasn't clear where they are to leave their sports gear... do they have a second locker or a locked cage for their sports kit?

BitByBit · 01/09/2015 13:30

Also - do they need to bring their own towels for swimming or is there provision at school? Can already foresee wet towels left in sports bag for the week...

mummyinatizz · 01/09/2015 18:46

I asked office and had a call from teacher today saying my son wouldn't need games kit tomorrow as not timetabled games/sport, and sports teachers wouldn't expect boys to have kit with them tomorrow on day 1. DS is in yr6 at W. Though they might want trainers at least to try out few things at lunch time/have a kick around.

That said he did yr6 there last year and left his sports kit in locker, most of books left at home.

And yes when they have swimming, they will need a towel, but can just bring towel and trunks to school that day and hopefully home again!

Not sure if same this year, but last year whites for PE (generally indoor hockey, basketball, raquetball) or swimming (for one half term) and blues for games, ie rugby autumn term and hockey spring.

hope they all have fun tomorrow.

Could anyone please advise on applying both to Whitgift and Trinity? Whitgift would be our preferred option and we are thinking about applying to Trinity as a back-up. My older DS goes to Whitgift, but I don't want to assume that it will make it easier for the younger one to get in.

I am aware Whitgift want to know that they are a genuine first choice (which they would be in this case), I also know that they may be sensitive about boys applying to Trinity as well... Would applying to Trinity damage DS's chances of getting into Whitgift? I'd be grateful for any thoughts/suggestions - don't want to mess up this one! Confused

Seeline · 29/09/2015 09:07

I'm sure others will be along to advise, but personally we applied to both and got offers from both (4 years ago). I know of others that have done the same.

Berora · 30/09/2015 21:58

Thank you Seeline, that's very helpful.

quangotango · 04/10/2015 01:45

when does the 2016 thread start or is it hidden somewhere?

Seeline · 05/10/2015 09:43

Haven't seen one yet......

quangotango · 05/10/2015 17:06

Is it too early do you think?

I need some serious hand holding as am absolutely bricking it already due to being in this stupid high birth-rate year which nearly did for us back in 2009 at Reception.

Seeline · 06/10/2015 09:10

No - not too early! All the open days are happening so questions are bound to start cropping up! This lot a re a friendly bunch so ask away! Where are you looking at? Smile

MrsPatmore · 06/10/2015 10:16

Think it would be a good idea to start a 2016 thread. My ds in Year 5 so we've started looking at schools for 11+ and due to see Whitgift on 10th Nov Open Day.

quangotango · 06/10/2015 10:35

HI Seeline looking at T, W & C for my ds1. My favourite by far is T in terms of match between family ethos and what they say. Really expected to hate W but can't fault it so far really (if you discount the rumours of elitism and a worry of a non sports superstar being ignored). C am ambivalent about, like but dont love, but its probably our best possible option due to current school etc.

DS1 likes all 3. He is a good all rounder but no ovbious hooks. He loves sport and plays on a lot of teams but no academy, county etc. Plays 2 instruments but only up to grade 3 as has taken them steady due to all the other extracurricular stuff he does. Academically he's OK but no dead cert. Maths and VR fine I'd say but much weaker in English. Has a tutor for English and is improving, but slowly. School say T don't like an obvious weakness in one. He is fine with grammar, OK with creative writing, comprehension is his weak point.

I think in a low birth rate year he'd be fine but this year worries me. Worries me he'll get nothing in the independents and we only have one state option we are close enough to to have a slim chance to get in as we are not church goers. We are only just in the catchment area for a normal year, this year they are expecting it might not go out all the way. He's our eldest so no siblings.

Seeline · 06/10/2015 10:42

I think the 2016 thread has begun now!!
quango My Ds is at T - started as a JBug and now in Y3. So far we have been very happy with the school. Particularly agree about the ethos. It really does exist throughout the school all the time, not just on open day! I'm not sure about the view on T not liking a weakness - I am sure I have heard of boys being given offers having shown a weakness in one or another area. I suppose it depends on how well they do in the other areas. See you on the new thread no doubt!

quangotango · 06/10/2015 10:44

glad to hear it Seeline! and see you on the new thread :)

The 2016 thread

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/education/2481562-ALL-NEW-WHITGIFT-TRINITY-DULWICH-ALLEYNS-10-11-2016

and the parallel girls' school thread

(Presumably co-ed considered alongside single sex options can go on either/both)
