Year 3 assessment results

My daughter is in year 3 at school and they have been under going an assessment week. At the end of KS1 she was coming out with 2a and 3c but she came home last week and said she had only got a 2c in her reading comprehension and that is was one of the lower grades in the class.
She seems to have lost all motivation to work hard since she got in year 3 and is happy to just do the minimum. I unfortunately don't have an awful lot of time to do homework as I am a single mum and am out two evenings a week at college and to be honest the time I do spend with my children I don't want to spend cajoling them to do homework.

DD got "downgraded" when the Junior school tested them beginning of Y3 after coming from the Infant school next door. We were aware of issues but the Y2 teacher was a nightmare and only told us of problems late in the year, too late to do a lot.

So in Y3 we practice now each week, either literacy or maths, depending on the homework, they get literacy or maths, alternate week and we do the other subject by workbook at home. She was re-tested just before half-term and was put "as expected, slightly above" so for us being rigorous with homework and practice is working.

Also, the new curriculum comes into it, they expect a lot more suddenly.

Have you spoken to the teacher? 2C at middle of Y3 is low but they could have introduced their own system as the old NC level have been abolished. Our school is not giving NC style ones anymore and her teacher said it would be difficult anyway with the new curriculum to compare Y2 to Y3.

I think you need to find out from the teacher what is going on. Then make a plan how to motivate her. Think what can be done in your limited time and in a way she likes to do something.

Thanks for your reply. It is parents night at the end of the month so hopefully we can come up with a plan. She is bright but just not motivated and only wants to do the minumum. Reading comprehension seems to be one of the areas they are keen on so I am going to start giving her things that interest her-she loves animals and wildlife for example and ask her questions about it and to do tings like use the information to make a booklet or poster

Is the 2c based on a particular test or ongoing assessment? I remember DS having a "blip" on a test in Year 4 - he got a whole level lower than usual - his teacher just said they would quietly ignore it!

Also I seem to remember in Year 3 they make more of a focus on writing proper sentences in response to comprehension - so is it the writing that is letting her down rather than reading iyswim?
