At what age do you need to 'reserve' your childs place at Infants School?

Ds1 is 15 months and there are 2 Infants schools in our area. I have a preference and want to make sure he gets a place there.
What do I need to do?
Never done this before!
TIA.

In our area you apply the autumn before they start, so nearly a year beforehand. You can't usually do it any earlier.

Also depends if your Local Authority operates catchment areas. If so, you may not have a complete freedom to choose which school you want her to go to but like Kelly says, it's usually the autumn before they start that you complete the forms.

You may be able to register your interest so that you get invited to the open day and sent the prospectus, but you can't actually secure a place any earlier than the academic year before he is due to start. Timing of applications varies from one area to another , could be Autumn term or could be Spring, your Local Education Authority website should have details.

In our LEA (and most I believe now) you apply in the autumn before. For eg, DS2 is starting school next Sept and I haven?t even had the application form yet! It will come via the pre-school providers.
But by all means register your interest with the schools in question then you will be invited to their open days etc. Are you in the catchment? Early registration unfortunately will not help you if not
