Hi
I'm new to mumsnet. But I'm looking for advice for my dd.

Basically my dd 16 goes to a boarding school however she was put back a year due to issues at previous schools. But her school have started preparing them for making choices now.
She is bright and is predicted all A*'s her school is a good school however some departments have poor quality teaching. She would like to stay as she has her friends and it has excellent pastoral care however she would like to go to an American university or a Russell group university. Career wise she was would like to do law then politics.
She is unsure about doing the IB or doing alevels. But my question is how do you decide if to stay or move?

Yes lady her day fees would be free but we would still have to pay boarding fees. That is incentive to stay and one of the many reasons I'd like her to stay there

But the school itself gives awards for 6th form - if you get 10A* or more than you get your boarding fees fully paid. It is a great deal, and not found in many other places. What alternatives are you looking at?

YorkshireDayDreamer · 18/02/2015 15:51

From what I understood when she went they told me her day fees would be free. It is something I will question more at the time
DD likes rosall school and Cundall manor and St peters school.

Hi OP. Your story does seem familiar. Do you mean that you are completely new to MN or that you have reregged?

YorkshireDayDreamer · 18/02/2015 15:57

Completely new honestly

Two moves in two years would (potentially) be quite unsettling. That would be my concern, I think.

titchy · 18/02/2015 16:01

No you're not new - you were banned for sockpuppeting.

YorkshireDayDreamer · 18/02/2015 16:03

That is my opinion aswell cole I've told her your settled where you are and at least if you stay there you have supportive friends who will guide you through to starting university. But she is 50/50 about staying she loves the school and her friends and boarding but just doesn't like 2 subjects

She might change her view considerably (or several times) in the next year.

LIZS · 18/02/2015 16:10

So she gives up 2 subjects or is that not an option . She needs to discover that one teacher, positive or negative, should not reflect her view of the subject . I'm with LM, she needs to take a more mature overview and rise above personality mismatches. Ds has different staff for AS than gcse, in fact he has rarely had the same one from one year to next and now has more than one per subject. Sometimes a teachers reputation goes before them and I'm sure girls at a boarding school will gossip and colour each other's views. She really needs to take a longer term view and stop worrying about what comes next when she has barely arrived.

ShipwreckedAndComatose · 18/02/2015 16:12

Perhaps wait until the summer and discuss the different options with here then, looking at the pros and cons?

If she seriously feels this then it's worth investigating why

YorkshireDayDreamer · 18/02/2015 16:12

I'm hoping she will because she is tremendously happy and her friends are supportive.1 friend is leaving because she's an army child and they have chosen to use the money to buy a house instead of paying for fees and she isn't expected to gain a string of A*'s so that has made dd think it's ok to move. I've told her she's better off staying there and I can Talk to the school if she's still unhappy with the subjects by the end of next year

She's not unhappy at school. She just doesn't feel the quality of the teaching in some subjects is amazing but that may change by next year. I'm going to leave it and wait till next year because she most probably will have different teachers and she hasn't being there long enough to assess the teaching. I for one don't want her to leave I would rather see stay where she's settled

Afternoon all,

We've had a few reports about this thread and have decided to suspend it while we take a look behind the scenes.

ShipwreckedAndComatose · 18/02/2015 16:18

That seems to answer your op quite easily then Smile
