ds 8 is not particularly sporty but enjoys tennis and is doing very well in swimming. Should I be worried?

What would national average be? I've got no idea. Is SHE worried?

I hated all sports except swimming at that age. In fact, I didn't, I just loathed all the sports that were available at my school.

sailorsgal · 14/02/2015 19:52

ds loathes sport too as I did. I am fairly fit and I do encourage regular exercise and she said he swam well in the recent swimming gala.

My Dd is about the same age and she and school PE heartily dislike each other.

I'm not going to get her to be a hockey star or Olympic runner but we all swim, she skates, climbs, does karate and gymnastics and rides her bike.

I don't give a shit about school PE but want her to know that an active life can take many forms and is fun. It's a shame school still had a very team game focused approach which is not for her.

phonyics · 14/02/2015 19:52

Aren't around half of all schools below average? It might not be as bad as it sound.

Killasandra · 14/02/2015 19:53

Below average? Like 49% of the population?

Here's a grip for you.

Georgethesecond · 14/02/2015 19:56

Pretty sure I'm WELL below average. And so are my kids. Badge of pride!

(I'm skinny and I can run - just don't ever put me in a team).

sailorsgal · 14/02/2015 20:02

I hate that if you aren't good at team sports you are labelled. Ds has been told just this week he was rubbish at hockey by another boy.Angry

My 15yo DD is in bottom 0.5% for ball skills. Grin
Doesn't worry her or us.

isthatmorelego · 14/02/2015 20:13

Does he want to be a athlete if not who cares. D's is 8 as n D's north at all sporty.
Ds1 on the other hand only went to school to play sport and socialise in his eyes .mind you did tell his drama teacher he didn't want to be George Clooney

isthatmorelego · 14/02/2015 20:29

Ds1 is like this. Ds2 in his opinion was only in school for sport and socializing mind you when I was told the same thing by a very straight faced drama teacher obviously drama not sport I told her he didn't want to be George Clooney .
All kids are not sporty, doesn't need labelling for God sake

CliveCussler · 14/02/2015 20:35

I don't know how they measure school PE. And music.

Dd got low levels for effort and attainment last year for both despite doing very well out of school for both. She is in a swimming squad, did gymnastics and runs. She's also in a choir and plays an instrument.

School know about this, but didn't take any of it into account when marking. I just let it go last year, but wont be if it happens again.

BackforGood · 14/02/2015 20:47

Presumably half the population are 'below average' if you really could measure what an 'average' person achieves in PE. How are they even doing that ? Confused

sailorsgal · 14/02/2015 20:50

well I will be asking how they measure it after half term? Grin

Endler32 · 14/02/2015 20:53

My dd's are useless at sport and are below average, moth have mobility issues but try hard to take part. I don't really think it's important at all, if they were way below average in maths and English I would be more worried but sport is not that important.

CliveCussler · 14/02/2015 20:56

I think it's important if it's important to them (the kids). If they think they've tried really hard and done well in any subject, that should be recognized.

This is why some kids start thinking they're rubbish at things and stop trying.

isthatmorelego · 14/02/2015 21:00

Sorry for double post thought I'd lost it but obviously not.
See I'm below average e with tech Grin

Georgethesecond · 14/02/2015 21:58

I wouldn't worry. Some people are shit at PE. It's fine. Much better than being shit at maths.

It's not something I'd lose sleep over. Provided the dc behave themselves I couldn't care less how they measure up against the national average in pe and drama. Academic subjects are different: I'd be getting extra support if it was maths or English but pe? Don't think so.

spanieleyes · 15/02/2015 14:25

spanieleyes jr's last PE report said
"Spanieleyes jr always arrives for the lesson on time"

and that was it Blush

LePetitMarseillais · 15/02/2015 15:02

Hmm I think considering how important fitness and thus PE is it is important and should be treated like any other part of the curriculum ie those not achieving what they should, should be getting extra support.

My dd is like yours op and gets nothing,no intention of helping her improve or enjoy the lessons either.

It stinks. If the subject is of such little importance they shouldn't be teaching it at all.

sailorsgal · 15/02/2015 16:01

the same children always get picked for teams and the others get left out so not surprising some kids never improve. PE teacher is a bit old school and doesn't really seem to make it fun. I might be cynical but also have noticed all the parents who are able to follow every match their children are chosen far more than others.

DD and a ball together is a recipe for disaster.

But she loves playing hockey, swims and is currently top of her group. She does gymnastic ones a week and while she will never wins a competition it is great for posture, balance and general fitness.

She just started riding and is complaining about her leg muscles.

We walk to school 20 minutes one way at least twice, three times a week, the rest is normally by car due to stuff she needs to take with her, violin , large PE kit and forest school outfit.

I very much doubt she is unfit. If she is not above average in PE I don't care.

roguedad · 15/02/2015 20:30

No. Why would anyone care? Not remotely a subject.

LePetitMarseillais · 15/02/2015 21:21

Above national average I couldn't give a stuff but below then yes I do.As much as I loathed the subject it is important and kids being able to do basic skills and achieve national expectations is important.
