Tutoring for Eton

Posting in behalf of a friend. Last minute decision to sit son for Eton and Harrow. Has to do pretest (not sure when but quite soon) but at idependent school which has own senior so does not prepare boys for other schools.

Does anyone know of any tutors who will prepare a boy for these schools. Needs to be in Midlands or perhaps an internet service. The parents don't want to move him to another prep or consider any other schools as if he is unsuccessful he will stay at current school.

OP your friend has probably seen the video, but the link is here anyway. If you watch this one then it will link into the other two as well.

Re levels in maths it's difficult to say. My DS had always had a complete mental block about maths, and we were told that it was this that lead to him being wait listed and not given a place right away. Having said that, he was ultimately successful! and is not now the only boy in the bottom set for maths, all of whom are on course for an A/A* this summer.

In any event, being very bright is not an automatic 'in' either.

Just wanted to add an update following everyone's helpful comments earlier in the year. My friend's son has been offered a conditional place at Eton! All delighted. Now just need to work out how to prepare him for CE.

She asked me to pass on her thanks to all who offered insights and advice.

Good news! Smile

Gruach · 24/07/2015 16:49

That is good news. (They're going to have so much fun getting ready!)

You may not know but, as he's at an independent already, have they said he has to take CE (or scholarship) or would he be allowed to take the modified exam intended for state school pupils?

peteneras · 25/07/2015 00:00

Happy to hear he’s got an offer (conditional). Congratulations!

Just do make sure he’s not one of the 391 boys who have had their offers withdrawn due to a massive computer cockup at Eton with this admissions cycle- sending offers to 400 boys whilst only 9 were intended!

All being well, in the past few years all 100 per cent holders of conditional offer were admitted - a testament to Eton’s selection skill and accuracy.

Gruach · 25/07/2015 00:47

That is not such good news.

Fingers crossed for the OP's friend and her DS.

ilovevenice · 25/07/2015 13:18

This happened to friends of ours (offer issued then withdrawn) - she'd told him and everything. Sad
But this was a couple of weeks ago so presume your friend is ok OP.

Well done to the boy Smile

Dancingdreamer · 26/07/2015 21:11

Thank you everyone. He did get tied up in the email cock up but has got a real offer (all validated) hence why delayed posting!

The question of the CE or non-CE exam is a biggie that his Mum will have to resolve. Will let you know when she gets an answer.

Forgot to ask if anyone has any advice on choosing a house?

OP posts:
Gruach · 26/07/2015 21:35

They won't really need any (extra) advice ... It is as much a question of one of four house masters choosing them as the other way round - though there is obviously scope for the expression of a preference.

They should concentrate on the HM rather than the house and visit with open minds.

IndridCold · 27/07/2015 10:23

Very well done to your friend's DS, he will have a great time.

I second Gruachs comments about houses, it is as much a case of them choosing you as it is the other way around. There have been quite a lot of changes recently, and the housemasters are a pretty good bunch at the moment.

A few practical points your friend might want to bear in mind though:

Will the HM be there for the whole time, or will he be moving on after a few years.

Is the Dame kind and approachable.

If it is a catering house, is it close to Bekynton.
