Hi. Not sure if anyone can/is willing help here, but here goes…
ds got his mock results today. They range from 53%, to 90%. The majority of subjects were in the 70somethings. We have parents eve tomorrow, but can anyone tell me how this looks? What sort of marks get scholarships?

In some schools, it depends on the subjects. 90% just on the maths paper would probably be enough for them to snatch his hand off to get him in!

The 53% needs some attention - when is the actual exam?

LIZS · 19/01/2015 19:26

Is this CAS ? If so even 53% would be a good CE equivalent grade.

1805 · 19/01/2015 19:29

thanks. the 90 was in physics. 53 in french. 59 in maths, 57 in english.
the english and maths worry me a bit. exams are beginning of march.
tbh, it doesn't really bother me whether he gets a scholarship or not, but I'd like him to be in with a chance!

Yes I'd say the English and maths need a bit of work yet.

mertonmama · 19/01/2015 19:38

I'm also new to this but my understanding is that many schools will set a minimum level that has to be achieved in all papers. So a high mark in maths won't help if other papers aren't passed. St Paul's, for instance, requires 70% in all subjects.

Which school do you have an offer from?

1805 · 19/01/2015 19:43

yes. slightly surprised with the english tbh, but there you go. He must have bombed the french, as he told me he came second in the class with 85% in the listening paper!!!!

CAS? whats that? His class are preparing boys for 3 local schools, and I know they separate the work for the groups of boys, so ds exam were pretty tailored to the school he's going to. Does that sound right?

CAS is common academic scholarship used by some schools to award scholarships instead of CE. Usually sat early in May.

1805 · 19/01/2015 20:19

oh. yes I think its pretty much that but in March.

ok. ds home now and says a few of the marks e mailed to me are not right. the 53% he reckons should be 61%. However the english and maths are correct - (and the lowest.)

1805 the harder the scholarship exam the lower the mocks marks can be expected to be particularly if it is the first time that pupils have been exposed to those type of questions and they are used to coasting with easier work. It is not worth stressing about at this stage but rather building his confidence up. If the school have the right experience he will learn a lot more in the next few weeks about how to tackle harder questions. At the worst he won't improve enough in time to get an academic award but it will be extremely unlikely that he will have to do CE and his efforts at more advanced work will be useful when he starts senior school.

Laxmama · 20/01/2015 11:54

Merton - the 70% for St Paul's would be in CE not CAS, I think?

Lonecatwithkitten · 20/01/2015 13:01

I would be checking what the 'mock' paper was it is not unheard of for a GCSE Maths or English paper to be used to apply a short sharp shock to a cohort who had got a bit complacent.

netballcrazy · 20/01/2015 13:47

At least your child had mocks. Mine was sent into the exam with no full mock practice just some worksheets to do over the Xmas holiday (told this was all that was needed). Suffice to say didn't get an interview. Absolutely fuming esp when others had tutors and spent 4+ hours a day revising

inthename · 20/01/2015 16:38

Check what level papers they are using and how they mark them, the difference in the mark he was given to the one you were sent sounds simllar to what happened with ds as his school adjust the mark by 8% (teacher did say why but I can't remember!)
The marks in the 50's sound low for academic scholarship but it does depend on individual schools

thanks everyone.
Back from parents eve now.
So the french was 53%, which is bad.
Apart from that, the teachers seem to think he's on track for a good crack at getting an award. Of course you can never second guess these things, but they all seem happy, and I trust them.
They seem to be preparing the boys well, and the boys seem pretty ok with the work load. Roll on March when it will all be over!!!
Good luck to all scholarship dc!!
