Can you buy noun flashcards that don't have pictures on them?

Yes you can. The pictures act as another 'tool' to help them learn. It helps to put words into context and they take clues from the pictures. Also, part of learning to read is about understanding the story, discussing it and, importantly, enjoying it and pictures often enhance it for children.

I can see where you are coming from but this is what I've been lead to believe anyway!

But personally I don't rate the 'flash card' method of learning to read anyway. Learning phonics seems much more effective to me. Then they can work out almost any word once they have learned all the 'sounds'.

Couldn't you just make some?

Print some onto card, then you could get them laminated if you wanted them to last longer.

Socci how old is DD? I've had a couple of autistic children in classes I've taught. We used visual prompts to teach language, try using actual objects I found it more effective (except when teaching colours it's confusing if you've taught the word button and then introduce it as red) When teaching children to read learning phonics is the best thing to do (find out which scheme the school uses) and we always use picture as clues to words when teaching children to read.

If you check out the resource bank on tes.co.uk there are some great resources with flaps over the oicture so the children read the word then open the flap to see they got it right. My kids love these type of 'books'
