Just been having a little giggle about the reading book ds has got this week. Now please don't flame me-if you think i'm being un pc to point this out then don't post to shout at me -please.

it's a book that has been produced in association with haringey council called "letang and julie"

it's about a new girl joining a school after moving to the uk from botswana. Her teacher is Ms miller( note the ms rather than miss !). she calls her mum ' mma' . she then makes friends with Julie who uses a wheelchair in school and they go to play in the snow and build a "snowmum".
i'm really surprised they don't all sit and sing 'baa baa green sheep' together.
it's so 1980's "loony left" it's funny.

I still forget which one is Biff and which one is Chip and I have 2 children reading them!

I think also that the book represents the 'real world'. I live in a very multicultural area, went to college where I was one of only 2 white students in my class of 30 but that was fun. Went to friends houses, weddings etc and learnt a whole lot about other cultures in those 3 years than I have ever learned in my entire lifetime. I and my charges have also had disabled friends, had the albanian refugees in my school in 1998 and know lots of women who are ms.

"If I had to live in an all-white CoE enclave I would shoot myself rather than expire slowly from the boredom."

Gosh that's not very politically correct.

Biff, Chip and Kipper haven't really caught on in the Top Boys / Girls Nanes lists, have they?

singersgirl · 03/10/2006 20:26

Yes, I always thought it was odd that the white children in the ORT books didn't have real names (I always assumed it was so they didn't seem to be too white middle-class etc), but the ethnic minority children (Wilf, Wilma, Aneena and Nadim) all get to have proper names. Is that what the Americans call "positive discrimination"?

ScareyCaligulaCorday · 03/10/2006 20:26

I think it's because they wanted to call Biff Chardonnay and the snobby editor wouldn't let them

Controlfreak · 03/10/2006 20:31

All white CoE enclave is not that boring. We have our own multicultural group, Newcastle, Poland, France, Macedonia, Australia, Buckingham, Bradford, etc

This week so far we have had monsters, ghosts, robbers!!! all at 5 years. It all seems a bit dark to me.

I wonder if our kids are being subliminily (sod the spelling you know what I mean)demonised. With the exception of Biff, Chip, kipper and wotsit of course.

I was wondering, does anyone think that one book to read a day is just a bit fast.

I had imagined that you would have these books for at least two or three days. All seems a bit rushed to me.
