Help! Box method for multiplication - how do you do it?

That's it really - we didn't do it this way in the dim and distant past when I was at school. We've figured it out with whole numbers but can't figure it out when you are multiplying decimals...

Any help appreciated!

do you mean the grid method? as a year 5 teacher, i wouldn't use this method for decimals, as it's unnecessarily complex, imo.
i would argue that for a child who is ready to multiply with decimals, it's certainly not the most efficient method. better to use a compact, old fashioned method for multiplying with decimals. my school only uses the grid method as a brief precursor to the compact method (just to ensure that the understanding of the processes involved is secure).

Would second that. If they are old enough to be multiplying decimals, teach the good old fashioned method. I do love the grid method, but there's a time and place for everything.

Well I'm just the parent, not the teacher - so I don't get to decide what method she is taught!

(I have figured out how to do it since the OP btw)
