Somerhill schools Tonbridge

Looking at houses in the area and thinking of moving soon.

We've been to the Somerhill open day on Saturday and it was great. Staff seemed very competent and the facilities were fantastic.

Just wondering if there are any current parents willing to provide me with an overview of their thoughts and experiences there.

My DD is 5 and Yr1 my DS is 3 and would join kindergarten.
I'd like to know more about pastoral care and about whether it's a very high pressure environment once the DC reach 11+ age or whether they work hard academically but without pulling on the pressure so to speak.

That should be piling on the pressure.

I don't have much knowledge of the Pre Prep or Derwent Lodge but DS went to Yardley Court and loved every minute of his time there.

John Coakley, the Head of YC and Principal of all three schools, is amazing. He often says that the children's happiness is key to their learning and I'm sure it's this attitude that makes Somerhill such a happy and friendly place.

I wouldn't describe YC as high pressured, expectations regarding learning and behaviour are high but children are only expected to do their best and be proud of what they achieve.

DS sat scholarship/entrance exams for a couple of high profile public schools as well as taking the Kent 11 plus. He was never put under pressure during any of this, as always the expectation was that he would work hard and do his best. (he got offers from both public schools and full marks in the 11 plus)

The children do work hard and life at Somerhill is busy but there are also so many amazing opportunities to have fun and play. Camp building in the woods and snowball fights and sledging in the Winter were two of my sons favourites.

Felix. Thank you Thanks very useful overview.

Whilst I am after a school which has high standards in terms of eduction, I didn't want to sacrifice learning under pressure for a fun and enjoyable childhood.

The ethos you describe from the Head sounds perfect.

I have registered them now and await a taster day after half term and fingers crossed they will be offered a place.
