End of Year 6 Celebrations

Hi, does anyone have any ideas for an end of year 6 celebration? It could be that your son or daughter has already celebrated leaving primary school-what did they do? Was it really memorable or do you have some really exciting ideas of an event for children aged 10/11 in the North London area?

Any suggestions/costs involved would be greatly received. Many thanks in advance everyone.

The childre have a disco in the afternoon at school. School pay for disco and pta pay for a drink and snack for them all. They can wear own clothes. Whatever you do should aim to be free so as not to exclude anyone. It doesn't have to be memorable or exciting its not the prom!

Agree with heels - nothing fancy or costly which ups the ante for parents.

Discos, water fights etc - inexpensive, inclusive, and fun.

The local primary has a 'leavers assembly', where the head, y6, parents and staff apparently blub uncontrollably for an hour or so, and a tradition where they sign each others shirts. That's about it as far as I know, and seems to be enough!

School puts on a party straight after school & provides buns & squash but it's not a 'prom'. Last year was themed as a pirates party. So just cut down trousers & oldest t-shirt sufficed!

DD had a Leavers Assembly, Leavers Disco and lunch out on the last day of Y6. All paid for by the parents Hmm

Ours has a leavers assembly with a collection from parents for the local children's hospice charity on entry - a member of the charity always comes along and gets presented with a big bucket of change, (the kids always pretend it is not enough and send the bucket round the audience one last time) along with all the money from the Y6 fund raising efforts throughout the year.

so it is not just about them leaving but a huge celebration of their achievements throughout the year.

they also sign each other's shirts on the last day.

Dd 's school gave the pupils a choice of a disco or rounders/ bouncy castle - they all went for the rounders, bouncy castle and sumo suits with a barbecue.

We have a Leavers service in church ( everyone cries!), a leavers disco organised and paid for by the PTFA and a pool party and barbecue with the staff ( paid for by the school.) The parents don't pay for anything.

Ah, it doesn't get much more tear-jerky than a yr 6 leavers (sniff!) Smile

DS1 had a leavers service in church (ah, not a dry eye in the house), whole school leavers disco, and a yr 6 children vs parents and staff rounders (lots of fun, but they beat us Grin), and the traditional signing of school shirts.

The PTFA arranged for leavers' hoodies (with all their names on the back), optional and paid for by parents. A nice idea, although perhaps a bit limited (they grow out of them soon enough) but very nice to keep as they grow up.

DS1's teacher and TAs also gave all the class a gift each, followed by a very touching communication from the teacher towards the end of the summer hols, wishing them well in secondary, and a brill booklet for parents to help children with the move up.

So, none of any of the above too expensive but all very memorable, marking a bittersweet transition.
