Training/qualifications to work in schools ...

Aarrgghh! This is driving me barmy. I want to do some distance-learning to:
a) Gain a qualification in case I want to move in future, or if I need to reapply for job in reorganisation.
b) To learn some background/theory to the job that I do.
c) To stretch my brain a bit and do some 'academic' study.

I have a degree, and could apply to do PGCE or GTP now, but I don't want to. My current job (cover supervisor) mostly suits me well atm, and the job market in MFL round here is not great anyway, and I don't want to end up unemployed.

I can't find a suitable course at an appropriate level. Any suggestions?

I've asked the 'training' bod at school, but they're pretty hopeless and unhelpful.

You can do distance learning at the open university but i think at some point you have to take a leap of faith and go full time.

i found it so hard to find the course that i needed that i just want to give up

Angela - your link didn't work! What course were you linking to? I've been looking at the OU, and wondering about a Masters degree in Education , possibly specialising in SEN. I'm just not sure whether I can commit to 16 hrs a week study: it seems a lot.

Southeastastra - it's a nightmare trying to find the right course, isn't it? What are you looking for?

Do you have Higher Level Teaching Assistant status (see here ), because if you don't (and as a cover supervisor I don't know what qualifications you've needed) then the courses aimed at them would probably be of interest, and I think most LEA run courses specifically for Secondary - are you attached to a particular department, or do you work across subjects?.......

Or maybe something like this which are taster courses for secondary teaching run at the Institute of Education (are you in London? I think you are....)

There's an Education and Teacher training department listed.

Thanks Gladbag and AngelaChill: that's helpful. I will keep looking.
