Hi Notabraburning otter they are still using Biff n Chip books at my little ones school and there is a magazine in the shops that ties in with these books. The basic words are things like the, look, there, see, and, etc Hope this helps

The way reading is taught is changing and now the emphasis is on phonics - that way they can read almost anythihg rather than jst a few high frequency words. the latestt advice from the DofE says children's attention should be focused on decoding words rather than the use of unreliable strategies such as looking at the illustrations, rereading the sentence, saying the first sound, or guessing what might "fit".

If you look at these sites thay will tell you a lot about teaching phonics

Jolly phonics is a popular program which is easy for parents to augment / do themsleves. My kids (5 and 4) love it and have learnt to read very easily and quickly.

I quite agree julienetmum - absurd expecting children to remember 'made' and 'everyone' which are perfectly decodable WHEN they have taught the advanced code - which is generally not until late Yr 1 / Yr 2 if the school is doing it the 'slow' way.

JP will have done it by the end of Reception and the kids be well away with reading ....

Some children with a good visual memory will manage 'sight' words. But I'd be very worried if your teacher doesn't understand why 'sight' word learning-any words introduced before the particular code has been taught - is so detrimental to 20%-30% of children.
Further up the school it is these muddled children who will be the disruptive ones - and who can blame them?
