Bruern Abbey - any experience of this school?

Hi I am wondering if anyone has experience of this school? My ds yr 5 is dyslexic and from what the website tells me it looks like it could be a really good fit for him. I am hoping for two things firstly for him to have a better opinion of his ability to learn (& general self esteem) and secondly for him to reach his potential, whatever that may be.

I am wondering if anyone has experience of it? What happens to the boys after they move on to the next school, do they cope well etc?

thx

Secondhand information but a bright boy I know is really happy there. Not only has his self esteem improved but he is now being challenged with an exciting demanding syllabus rather than be restricted by 'lower set' work.

thanks summer ends, that helps. That is one of the things that my ds has to cope with always being in the bottom set for subjects as he doesn't conform with the 'standard or expected' way of processing. Any more feedback you have would be great.
What age did your friends son enter? How have they coped with the boarding aspect?

John Ford the head, is the ex deputy head of Westminster Cathedral Choir School and a fantastic and inspirational character. On the basis of him alone I'm sure it is a cracking school now

He entered start of year 6 (I think) and although I am sure was homesick is settled very well now. I think it is a shorter week as it does n't have Saturday school ( brought in on Monday, collected Friday). If I had a bright dyslexic boy who was being sidelined because of dsylexia I would definitely very seriously consider it. They have an assessment process which would help you and him decide what you thought of it.

I know a boy who went there aged 10. He went in awkward and unhappy and came out (last year) confident, funny , charming and achieving.

His Mum raves about the place - "it doesn't feel like a special needs school, it feels like a normal school which just happens really to understand special needs".

thats some really helpful feedback thank you.

Do you think that secondary schools view it as a special needs school? There leavers list looks good from what I know.

grovel, thats fantastic that your friends child has had such an amazing change through finding the right fit for a school. Thats exactly what I am dreaming of for mine!

Thanks for the comments about the head as well, its great to get feedback such as this that is impartial.
