...and still no reading book for DS who is in Reception. Do you think this is okay?
I would like him to bring a reading book home, but we do have lots of books at home that we read so its not a big problem.
It just doesn't feel me with confidence with the lack of organisation in his class.

We have not had one yet! There are still little and tired. And reading books are so dull!

LIZS · 27/09/2006 21:26

Perhaps they are doing phonics groundwork instead atm.

hoxtonchick · 27/09/2006 21:27

we have them every night . or not, if we forget ds' book bag (though that's generally if dp is doing the school run). i know other local schools aren't getting them kid, so wouldn't worry unduly.

kid · 27/09/2006 21:28

They are doing work on letters and numbers which I am pleased with his progress in. DS was bringing a book home from nursery so I just expected one from Reception too.

We get new ones every night. They must be following the Foundation curriculum so perhaps they are planning on starting after half term.

kid · 27/09/2006 21:30

I am a little bit tempted to go and ask if they need help setting it up! I am very glad we have no homework for him, DD gets enough for both of them!

we have a system where there is a book box out, and we can take one each morning to put in his bag to bring home. There's no compulsion about this, it's if you want to and how often you want to.

I have to say I hadn't even thought whether my ds is doing phonics groundwork, letters and numbers! The staff are concentrating on social skills and settling the children in.

There's about 11 more years to do letters and the rest

KBear · 27/09/2006 21:35

My DS has been at school full-time since Friday and has had homework already. I think homework in under 8's should be banned, but that's another thread!

kid · 27/09/2006 21:38

I work at DCs school, most of the other classes have reading books up and running which is why I am tempted to help the new Reception teacher set it up. I'm sure once folders and reading records are set up, it will run smoothly. Its just the getting it started that is taking its time.

OP posts:
Sunnysideup · 27/09/2006 21:41

Wot are folders and reading records????

3monkeys · 27/09/2006 22:01

My DD has had no homework or reading book yet! Started last Monday. She's only interested in what her friends had for lunch and who she played with!

curlew · 27/09/2006 22:32

In lots of countries your ds wouldn't be at school at all yet, and yet these couldtirs have reading levels better than ours at 11. Reception isn't about learning to read - it's about learning to be at school. Don't worry about it - read him tons of stories and let him play!!!!

coppertop · 27/09/2006 22:37

When ds1 was in Reception (now in Yr2) they didn't get reading books until after half-term. Before that they were busy concentrating on phonics etc as LIZS says.

singersgirl · 27/09/2006 22:58

Neither DSs (in 2 different schools for Reception) got reading books till after half-term. If the school is doing Jolly Phonics, they may not send books home at all until the children are blending confidently.

Clary · 27/09/2006 23:04

Oh crikey yes.

We started with books with no words in for DD last year in about October. Homework in reception? no thanks! Ours don't get it until yr 2 (unless you count 6 spellings a week they know anyway in yr 1)

They are 4 fgs!

nikkie · 29/09/2006 22:42

Ours started today! DD2 is so proud of bringing a reading book home like dd1 she has 'read' it to us so many times now!!!!!
She is 5 but has never shown any sign of wanting to read until today, so we are pleased anyway!

mummydear · 29/09/2006 23:01

Don't worry about getting reading books !!!

Mine Ds2 started recption and today has got his first 'reading' book.

Its not so much about reading at the moment but about how a book 'works', some children do not understand that text goes from left to right, and that the text relates to the pictures.

So they will not necessarily be reading it but getting used to the concept of it.

the last two weeks at school they have started jolly phonics so as someone said they have benn getting the ground work done.

kid · 30/09/2006 15:46

He did bring a book bag home this week with 2 reading books. He is very proud to be able to 'read' to us, even the book with no words! Its great to listen to him describe what is happening and make up his own story.

I'm fed up of dd2s books now (about 12 times a day foe the last week ) Think I will turn into one of those mothers nagging about changing them

LunarSea · 03/10/2006 19:33

We get two a week (though no words yet!) - but can also choose one extra book at a time - so can change that every day if we want to.

Gobbledispook · 03/10/2006 19:49

Last year ds1 didn't get a reading book until after half term either. Like others have said, they concentrated on learning the sounds with Jolly Phonics before they started with books.

I think in nursery they give books out as more of a pleasure thing - something from nursery to share with mummy and daddy. In reception, although they are encouraged to enjoy reading too, it's more of a learning exercise.

We had that one last week Yorkiegirl

Tonights is Dad was fierce (fierce for goodness sake for a 4 year old)
Mum was sad
etc etc (game of charades)

jamiesam · 03/10/2006 20:52

Ha - we've just started getting the Biff and Chip books - I say we, I do of course me ds1. Sadly, we'd (er, he'd!) already done one or two stages at nursery so starting all over again at the beginning is a bit grim (looking forward to 'oh floppy' in about 4 weeks time!)

hulababy · 03/10/2006 20:59

We had had reading books sent from day 2, with 1 or 2 flash cards each night. They use the Peter and Jane(!) books to introduce key words, and do phonics stuff at school. They are mind blocking, although they are vaguely more stimulating than the Floppy and co ones we have at home, lol!

DD is struggling with her two current words, so got same ones again tonight, so there is no pressure to do it at any speed. All own pace.
