Do they have their own desks and if so, from what age?

At the moment homework is negligable and just done at the kitchen table. Not wanting to buy new furniture in case we leave soon but considering a desk

I was worrying about this last night as DD is now 10 and in Yr 6 and was sat at the dining table in the lounger/diner with everyone doing things round her!

Was wondering if I should send her to her bedroom with a tray but really wouldn't trust her to sit and do it tbh as she tends to wander, do gymnatics etc. It took nearly 3 hours (with tea in between) to do some numberacy last night -it was hard though - suppose thats a different thread though "How do I help my 10 year old DD with her homework when I haven't got a clue?"

curlew · 26/09/2006 10:34

Deends what it is. DD is 10, and sometimes has an extended bit of writing to do, which she likes to take off to her bedroom. Sometimes she sits at her desk (it's not a formal desk, btw, it's the "surface" in her room where she does everything, experimenting with make up that sort of thing)sometimes she sits up in bed with a clip board. Other stuff like maths usually gets done in the kitchen or wherever the rest of us are so that she can ask for help and not miss out on whatevfer else is going on. We don't have a TV in our living room, though.

Hallgerda · 26/09/2006 10:39

DS1(12) has his own desk in his room (actually a card table). DS2(8) and DS3(7) whose rooms are too small for extra tables use the downstairs play table that everyone outgrown but we haven't got round to replacing with something more suitable .

SKYTVADDICT, I wouldn't recommend the tray approach - your daughter's handwriting will almost certainly be neater if she uses a table. Working through distractions is a useful skill.

ok your dc are a bit older so have more homework really. With dd at the moment it's just a bit of practising numbers and letters and colouring in a picture , that kind of thing. I've noticed she tends to strew crayons and pens, glue and all sorts of stuff on the (wooden) floor in her room and do her "artwork" in their on a placemat, although we have a few tables around the place she could use so I was thinking a desk/work surface in her room might be a good idea.

We used to use the kitchen table because it was the only one we all could fit around but when we came to Berlin I got a delivery from Ikea because we left half of our old stuff back down south so among other things I got them a computer desk each (Mikael I think) dd chose a bright yellow and ds a black one and they fit across the end of their beds so there is a lamp on the desk and they just turn it for reading in bed. The pull out bit for the keyboard is used for keeping school books and pencil boxes on.
I am also trying to keep it simple because of the hope and chance of a move in 1 year so we have adopted a minimalistic style! Also Ikea is so cheap that it won't hurt to leave it all if we can't take it with us.

mumblechum · 26/09/2006 12:45

If it's something my ds needs to Google, he'll sit at the desk in my study, otherwise dining room table. If he does it at the kitchen table he'll get too distracted. He's so knackered when he gets home (just started secondary) I let him veg out for an hour before he starts on the homework. He's not allowed to take schoolbooks etc into his room as it's a black hole into which everything is sucked....

DominiConnor · 26/09/2006 16:17

I've read that there is a huge correlation between having a desk in a kid's room and how they do in education.

somersetmum · 26/09/2006 21:51

ds is 8. When we moved to a new house last year he really wanted a bunk bed, so we bought one with a desk and a futon under it. We haven't encouraged him to use the desk, he's taken to using it himself. He uses the desk all the time, not necessarily just for homework. He's been writing a diary, making posters, writing stories, all voluntarily. We thought it would be a five minute fad, but he is still using it just as much now. Personally, I think it is good that he is used to the desk so he won't feel like homework is a major chore when he's older.

Loshad · 26/09/2006 22:05

Mine have desks in their rooms, but all prefer to do homework on kitchen table. They work quietly and sensibly, and it's nice having them around so have never chased them of to their rooms - guess they'll go soon enough

SSSandy · 27/09/2006 08:42

That's interesting everyone.

Admylin never thought about just getting a computer desk, they don't take up much room so that may be a good idea. I'll look into it. I had a look at Ikea desks in the catalogue and they were all huge. Dd's room has a bookcase the length of one wall so I am limited as to what I can put in there.

Domini - never heard about that. Assuming kids with desks in their rooms did better at school then. Makes sense.

When I was a teenager, I shared a room with my sister who was so messy you wouldn't believe it. Couldn't have done ANY kind of homework in there. I used to get so annoyed, I'd be right in the middle of something and have to keep clearing away because it was time to use the dining table to eat or someone was watching TV in the living room or came in to play music in the kind of rumpus room we had. It was a real pain. Would have loved a room of my own with a desk in it

Admylin those computer desks are a great idea. It never occured to me. Found the Michel one in the Ikea catalogue and dd wants the bright canary yellow one! Think we'll get it, it's a good solution. Thanks for that!

My dd has the bright yellow one too, the bottom bit where the computer should go is perfect for the huge ranzen bag from school, all tidy and out of the way! We got them the Traktor Hocker mit Rollen (25 Euro) aswell , comes in bright colours too I think.
