5 year old help

Hello,

I could really do with a spot of advice.

My DS is 5 and has just entered year 1, we have noticed that well to be honest its hard to engage him with doing reading or writing; as he thinks that by saying i cant do or dont know it someone else will do it for him; then he just smiles. I know he is pulling the leg of people, as when he is engaged in something he shows that he can do it.

The problem I have is that he is using this approach in class and it was noted in his Reception report, more so they have been assessed for group work in Year 1 and has been put in a group with people who well really struggle with basic skills or just prefer to monkey about.

I know he is only 5, but I need to work out how to get him to focus and switch on in class, as I am worried about this attitude sticking with him. Like I mention, it is a real drag to get him to do things like this, but once engaged he can do it. Any advice?

Thank you

Well engage him ! Talk to him about his favourite books and toys, and games and go from there.

A lot of boys take longer to enjoy school and his school should know this.

IMO and E there's too much emphasis put on academic work at such a young age (in Finland they don't start till age 7) so don't worry.

In my view it's pointless trying to work out how to get him on board at home - school is a totally different environment. Ask for a meeting with the teacher, and discuss /share ways of getting him to do it. My DD1 can zone out at times, it was helpful for her teacher to know that the word I'd been using was "focus" and she then used the same one.
