Taking time off of Uni...

My brother has got a place at Uni starting in a couple of weeks. It's in London so he's going to live at home... So he's not too worried about the social aspect so much as the work.

My parents are going to a wedding abroad 3 weeks after he starts and he wants to go.

How bad would it be to miss 4 days of Uni in the 3rd week?

He's very studious, his GCSE and A Level results were all A*'s and A's.

Thinking back to my own days I wouldn't advise it. I think the settling in period, learning to use the library, settling into a study routine and doing the initial assignments and preparation for seminars etc set the tone for the rest of the year.

However I doubt he would be seriously behind. If he desperately needs to go he should have a word with his personal tutor, let his lecturers know and arrange to borrow other peoples notes.

Unless it's the wedding of someone he's particularly close to, then I don't think he should go. The start of term is an important time and he should be focussing on university.
