The ones I know were radiographers first, so a three year course, then another year or so. You need to look into the course requirements as they may be different where you are. The Society of Radiographers may be able to guide you, that or NHS careers.

Hope this helps.

it does, i'll need to do an access course on top of this as have not been studying for 10 years

it'll be 5 years in all then?

i have 3 kids, 2 of which are in full time education (primary school) and youngest starting part time nursery in september

5 years sound about right.

Tangchi · 16/07/2014 18:44

Depends - most come from a radiographer background. This is 3 years. Usual to work in radiography for a couple of years then apply to train as sonographer. My center trains to fill need so specialising in either abdominal work for example or obstetrics and gyne. Recently we have trained science graduates who have not come from a radiography background. But very competitive

I've looked at this and wondered if they would take a vet?

LadySybilLikesCake · 16/07/2014 21:41

I expect you'd have to go down the same route, FiveHoursSleep, so another 5 years of training Sad

FiveHoursSleep · 16/07/2014 21:50

Yeah, that's what I thought and I don't have another 5 year's study in me!

LadySybilLikesCake · 16/07/2014 21:54

Sad I'm not sure how it works in a vets, but are you able to do animal sonography?

FiveHoursSleep · 16/07/2014 22:08

I can do basic ultrasonography but haven't got any further qualifications in it. Better at radiography!

CMOTDibbler · 16/07/2014 22:13

Fivehours - I recently visited a vet centre where they did a lot of animal imaging and I thought the vet radiologists were fab. I was amazed at the real time MRI reporting

FiveHoursSleep · 16/07/2014 22:24

There are veterinary imaging qualifications, usually post grad, but new grads come out familiar with the concepts of radiography and ultrasonography. I'm older,s o we were only taught radiography, ultrasound was learnt on the job.
