if school lunch costs £1.42 a day

I tried to work it out based on

juice - 50p (litre carton over the week)
bread - 90p
meat - 2.80
fruit - 1.80
crisps / treat - 2.00

works out at £1.60 a day

so I'm right in thinking a school lunch is cheaper .. or am I going mad some way

I do packed lunches because they are much better value, better quality, and I can control what they are eating. My 3 are allowed school dinner once a week, if they choose to - for primary school that's £1.65 a day, for the two at secondary school they need £2-2.50.

For much less than the £1.65, I can give my 3 a packed lunch with predominantly home-made, wholegrain foods, including mostly organic. I make all my own bread, cakes, biscuits etc, as well as yoghurt sometimes, and they only have crisps once a week. One of my home-made loaves of bread, that does the 5 of us for one lunch, costs approx 20p if using non-organic flour, up to a maximum of about 30-35p for the best organic flour. So maximum of 7p per person per day for the bread on the days we have sandwiches.

For me it's not just about the cost, but about ensuring the quality of what they eat and the whole balanced diet. I like to know exactly what they are all eating, to make sure it fits into the wider plan of our whole family diet.

Moreover, they love the packed lunches, they get a wide variety (not just sarnies every day, although they do love those!), and it's really no faff as some seem to think - on the days my husband needs one too, I can make 4 packed lunches in less than 15 minutes!

no school dinners on offer at my kids school either, so they both have packed lunch - have never thought about what I spend on them, it's just part of the weekly shop

At our school, dinners are £1.65 a day, but DS has packed lunch. I do: Sqeezy cheese with prawns in,£1 Savers Raisins at about 5p a day, £3 mon-fri on bread, (but DP eats it like its about to be taken off him) and a bag of apples, £1. some of these things are eaten after school also, so i cant really say this is the cost purely for lunches. I do think lunches are cheaper, but are also a bit more hassle added to the day,and DS hates carrying the box some days. (i carry everything else) I prefer packed lunches because DS hasnt figured out that he can throw away uneaten food, so i get to monitor what he's eating day by day. (hes 5) Its interesting reading everyone elses views.

Catching up on this thread and my biggest thoughts are why should school lunch charges have to vary by so much from region to region and why should the menu options (or in a lot of cases, lack of options) vary so considerably too?

It is so frustrating. As with so many other areas of life nowadays, everyone seems so intent in re-inventing the wheel for their own small (or large) area and forgets that we can learn from each other and find common areas that would actually benefit everyone by a pulling together of resources and a sharing/standardising of costs.
