Proud mum moment

Dd starts reception class on Wednesday. At tge end of last term we were given an envelope with several words in it, Floppy, a, and Mum, Dad, Biff & Chipper. Being the bad mum that I am I put it in the paper rack and forgot about it. However I have been doing Jolly Phonics at home.

We have just had our house decorated and my mum was helping me get sorted when she found this envelope. Whoops, so I showed them to dd and blow me, if she didn't read every single word, spelling them out phonetically.

Am now very very tempted just to ignore any awful ORT books that come home and just carry on reading via phonics instead.

That's lovely!

I don't think it will do any harm to ignore the awful ORT books, but it sounds as if your daughter will probably knock them off in about two minutes each anyhow.

ORT are awful, but both mine loved them! Don't dismiss them out of hand - particularly as they get more difficult, I think they have the best stories. And as there are so many of them it's usually possible to find a book to reflect a child's interests. So brace yourself for a year or two of Biff and Chip!

Isn't she good?! My year 1 boy is slowly schlepping along with his reading, sigh.

I guess we learn to read by both recognising words and phonetics, but I am very hot on phonics because you at least have a chance of figuring out what most words are.
