Have we got enough people for a MN jury?

I want to take the boys out of school for the day next Friday to go away for the weekend.DS1 is Yr 8,DS2 is Yr 2.They both have attendance records of 98%+ since they started school.
So,do I go through the redtape rigmarole of applying for permission when they start back(Monday) and risk it not going through on time,or do I just take them out and keep schtum?

Votes from the jury please?

Get permission. Although it would have to be an important weekend away for me to want to take my children out of school even for a day.

hana · 01/09/2006 20:15

permission

MrsFio · 01/09/2006 20:16

kepp quiet, they are your children and its first week back for heavens sake so its not as if they will miss anything

sugarfree · 01/09/2006 20:16

Get permission.

You will affect the schools attendance record.

At Ds's school they have a zero unauthorised absence record and really want to keep it that way.

If you keep schtum, they will drop you in it from a greater height, IYKWIM.

Start back Monday,I want to take them out Friday, yes.

bananaloaf · 01/09/2006 20:18

permission

sugarfree · 01/09/2006 20:19

yes, they do tend to blab, don't they.
Are they likely to refuse permission? If they do and I take them out anyway, what happens then?
PS.I am the type of mother that sends them in for the afternoon if they've been off sick in the morning but look brighter by lunchtime.

really?
you'd make something up?
not very adult and sends wrong message to kids - teachers always know when a reason for absence is the truth or not

SherlockLGJ · 01/09/2006 20:20

FattieM

Children will be children, they will go into school on Monday and say, when we went to Disney, or Paris or Dublin or whatever. Better to obtain permission. IMO

5 for permission and 2 against.Hmmm,I think I'll end up asking because otherwise the guilt will ruin the weekend and the Bad Karma Fairy will get me.

im tkaign ds1 out for a day to aller a paris avec moi

noonar · 01/09/2006 20:28

I teach yr 5 and I have quite a relaxed attitude towards the odd day out for special occasions.

However, at the beginning of term it's vital that they attend, so that they can find their feet, build a relationship with the new teacher, and not miss the introduction to topic work etc...

I see many children coming back from term time holidays in September and October. They are disorientated and behind. They also look at me blankly and say 'what do I do?' when their classmates settle down to a piece of work which was started in their absence. It's not nice for the child and, I admit, irritating for the teacher.

Although I appreciate that it's only for a day, it's poor timing , IMO.

sugarfree · 01/09/2006 20:38

Ds1 has different teachers for every subject (secondary)and has met them all already.
Ds2 has the same teacher he had in Reception again.

Cod,you asking before you take ds out pour allez a Paris?(I think you should take him for coctails at the Mulin Rouge btw )

Agree with noonar, it's the worst time to take children out of school.

If it's very important to you, then it's up to you, but do get permission.

So often we have parents aying their lo was ill, then the lo tells all about the shopping they did etc!

JennyLee · 01/09/2006 22:43

I would ask permission, then you don't have to worry

expatinscotland · 01/09/2006 22:43

take 'em out and keep schtum.
