Has anyone out there had their kids in American schools and then come back into the UK system. we will be doing this next year with 2nd grader coming back to year 4 and a Kindergartener coming back to year 2. i think the transition will be most out of sync coming into year 2 and would appreciate any advice on making the change.

I don't have personal experience but there are a quite a few expat Americans round here. The schools tend to slot the child into the most approriate age group to begin with, to assess them and then move them elsewhere within the system, if necessary. The American children don't seem to have any trouble integrating into the British system, although they might need to do some extra homework to begin with. Good luck with your move.

As a child I emigrated/moved back from Toronto to UK twice as a child and also lived in another country for nearly a year, so that was 6 times re-adjusting to new schools/systems/children/community etc. As a middle-ager (I guess a nearly 40-year-old is classed as such) I can only say that the problems I had were down to the quality of the schools and teachers. As a child the change in environment was a bonus and we loved moving to different countries and seeing new things, however I had a terrible schooling once we settled back in England and although my parents complained I was left to make the most of where I was put. I think I did very well considering but still think about what I might have achieved if I had been encouraged/tutored a bit more, I don't think we were ever shown what 'revision' was supposed to be (memories of nearly a whole term in a portacabin classroom with never a teacher in attendance, shudders, if it happened to my daughter I'd be there making my demands!!!). I'm thankful I made a choice to go to a Further Ed College and so made some ground up and felt treated as an adult, not having been one of the select few students who were coddled, ie b*** the rest!! Oh if I could go back in time...

Thanks for the input mommy and sue donim. One of our big issues is that we will be moving back to Islington with all the attendant worries about getting the kids into a decent school, hopefully state. So fingers crossed!
