Do your DC attend their for free?? Or do they only pay a portion?? Considering applying for a job and I would like to know the perks (if any!) first

There's usually a reduction but this varies from school to school. Can be a lot in the larger prestigious schools (although obviously they tend to be single sex), much less in poorer schools.

Picturesinthefirelight · 29/01/2014 10:32

It's a how long is a piece if string question

I don't know any school that lets teachers children attend for free

We get 50% bursary.

duchesse · 29/01/2014 10:32

And usually I think only applies to teaching staff.

Lottiedoubtie · 29/01/2014 10:34

Highest teaching staff reduction I've ever known is 60%. I believe the head's children don't pay anything in some schools though.

duchesse · 29/01/2014 10:36

I think it's 25% at my children's. Both parents of a friend of DD1 taught there and I think they got 2x staff discount for their DD. Only one child though so not a cripplingly expensive move for the school.

Mollychoppy · 29/01/2014 10:54

Hmmm ok thanks. Worth emailing and enquiring first then. Thank you

Locally it is up to 66% off for some schools, and sometimes a discount is also given for non-teaching staff.

Piggychunk · 29/01/2014 15:39

At DH school it works out around just over 50% . It works out its only just a tad more expensive to send our children there than after school and breakfast club at previous state school as we both work full time

MotherOfSuburbia · 29/01/2014 16:42

50% for us and that is for all full-time staff. Works out as a bit more though as they take fees in salary sacrifice so it works out well with tax. Also free breakfast and after school clubs.

jo164 · 29/01/2014 17:48

It's up to 75% for teaching staff, but only 10-20% for non teaching staff at the school where I work. All breakfast and after school clubs are free, because this works in favour of the school, so that we can attend meetings, parents forum etc. without having to worry about childcare.

stealthsquiggle · 29/01/2014 17:52

Variable discounts up to about 70% (including, I think, lower discounts for some non-teaching staff) at DC's school, but I know they are higher than the "norm" because the school only goes to Y8 and has no reciprocal arrangements with any senior schools (so you are on your own from Y9 onwards and a lot of staff children move into state school at that point)

So yes, OP, well worth asking.

trinity0097 · 29/01/2014 19:11

Our FT staff have a 85% discount

mummytime · 29/01/2014 19:33

I know a lot of schools which give a far smaller staff discount eg 10%.

Schmedz · 29/01/2014 19:42

The most I have heard of is 90%. Of course, work abroad and fees are almost always completely free. My school currently offers 30% but it used to be nothing at all.

LauraBridges · 29/01/2014 20:25

Our son paid 15% of fees age 4 - 13. Not all prep schools are the same. One couple - both teachers had 3 chidlren there and their father worked at one of the top UK boarding schools where the family had free accommodation and free education for 3 children from age 13 - 18.

However at our daughter's very academic day school teachers only got a tiny discount 10% or something and the one daughter there we knew left after 2 years as she could not keep up with the work so does not always work out.

I think they have to charge at least 15% to ensure it is not taxed as a benefit in kind as 15% is the marginal cost of the place after a case called Pepper & Hart.

wordfactory · 30/01/2014 08:40

My friend gets a 50% discount and works in the administration section.

DalmationDots · 31/01/2014 18:13

where I used to work DC could have gone for 50% fees. DC were unfortunately very settled at other schools though. It depends a lot on the school, there are some where it is free and others where you only get 20% discount.
If I had my time again I would have got into the school I want DC to go to earlier.

HamletsSister · 31/01/2014 18:17

If you e-mail to ask, beware of them seeing this as a negative in your job application. Would you employ someone who was applying for the perks?

Stressedtothehilt · 31/01/2014 19:47

Thank you all very interesting to see the wide variation in this. Before I had chance to email the job advert was removed from their website! Damn it. Next time one appears I may set up a bogus email just to enquire :)
