Feel upset about DD on an IEP

She's 5 and in year one. Her progress has been slow but we found out she needed glasses in October...so her reading has improved according to her teacher.

Today the teacher told me that she is putting an IEP in place mainly for numbers as DDs reading has improved so much...but numer wise the teacher says DD needs to learn to recognise number 11 to 20 and order them.

Teacher says she has no concerns about DD in general, she's confident, popular and happy...she does say "She's just one of those children who'd rather be running about in the playground than doing numbers"

She also says DD doesn't like wearing her glasses...she only has to wear them in the classroom and I keep telling her to put them on!

ANyway...I feel a bit upset really. I'm happy she is getting help...but she turns 6 soon and she can't even recognise numbers 11 to 20!

I focused so much on helping her read over the last 2 terms that I let maths slide!

Teacher says she wants her on the IEP for the rest of the year 1...but that depending on her ability to reatain (which is sketchy) she may be taken from it in year 2.

DD is a mad hatter...she is very enegetic, full of beans and fun...which is what makes her popular. She likes learning the teacher says...which is good...I'm just nervous incase DD always struggles!

Please don't worry too much. It sounds like everyone is doing their best. Remember in other countries other children don't start until they are 7 - she will get there when she is ready. (my ds has had a boy join his yr3 class this year with no schooling & is catching up fast - there is a lot of research that shows that 7 is the right age for serious learning). I would say try & find some positive glasses wearing role models!

Thanks gosh. I do feel like she's still very young. I think I felt a bit sad that the teacher didn't offer up the positives...I had to ask! I did ask as I knew I'd be bothered by it all later.

She is very articulate...speaks like a much older child and my older DD took ages to "get" reading.

This all sounds good- you have been able to help your dd with her literacy and now the teacher is willing to help her with her maths, sounds like everybody is on the ball. Smile

This site was made for a boy worried about wearing his glasses but it's got lots of sweet glasses stories on it

I agree not to worry, Dc are expected to do too much too soon nowadays (what ever happened to being a child?). If the CT is offering additional support too that is fantastic....you will probably find that further down the line she will no longer need it.

We learn so much from our eyes as we are developing so your Dd will be playing catch up now, if her reading is anything to go by this will happen very quickly.

Glasses are such a bloody PITA...I have been wearing them since I was 4. Do you wear glasses? If not could you not get some of those cheap fashion glasses (with plain lenses in) and say you have to wear them while your Dd is at school?? maybe if mum is wearing them she will think they are cool Smile

I don't wear glasses Helly but funnily enough, my older dd aged 9 has nagged me for fashion glasses for about a year now...and yesterday I got her some! It was odd that I did that on the day I found that DD2 didn't like wearing hers!

DD LOVES her fake glasses and other DD hates her real ones but her big sister having some might help her see them positively. We also watchd Taylor Swift vids this morning and she wears some so that also helped!
