Too much homework?

My dd is in year 3 and the amount of homework she is bringing home is getting silly. She has to read for a minimum of 15 minutes per day, which is fine, but then she has another task to do each day. A spelling sheet on day 1, with a word search and literacy tasks, then the need to learn the set of spellings to be tested. Then she'll have 2 pages of numeracy, plus 2 days of other stuff, often related to the topic they are working on. Oh and they have to find time to learn their times tables.

Yesterday she spent over 3 hours doing one side of her maths homework. I didn't think it was particularly difficult, but she just couldn't grasp what she was expected to be doing, which made me think it hadn't been covered in class. We ended up with her having a complete meltdown.

I've now decided that from now on, whatever can't be done in 30 minutes, won't get done. Am I being unreasonable, or does this sound like a lot for a 7 year old? I do hate homework and that it eats into their "free" time. It is eroding our children's childhood, which I really resent. I can't even see how it helps them, other than the reading and times tables. I think we are overloading children, which is going to switch them off learning.

Ours used to do half an hour a day reading/spelling/whatever, plus 20 min music practise (piano).... so about 50min each day used up (but they got home at 3.30 - so it only took til 5 with a break)

now it is closer to an hour and a half... they are in Y7 and 8 ..... and have still done most before tea - with a break after getting in..

but they are in top sets for everything and are chosen to do other stuff regularly - school council, school magazine etc... they have a strong work ethic and stuff gets done...

I guess I'm a "pushy" mum.. we don't sit round watching tv, they have friends round/go round theirs, we go out with the dog, to the cinema, play scrabble/monopoly/cluedo/carcassonne/tiddlywinks do some crafting etc etc etc... but other than an hour or so just before bedtime....we would not sit watching telly.

BUT - til the kids were in Y6 I was a SAHM/very part time worker - so picked up from school every day.... now they have to get in and get on with it before I get home from work a couple of nights, but I still only work part time.. I cannot imagine them having had the time to do this if I had been working full time.

Well, my DD is in top set Yr8 and has about 45 minutes a night and is progressing very well. She does study during break time at school though.

When I was at secondary (in the good old days before everything got so dumbed down Hmm) I was in top sets for everything and didn't hit the 2 hours a night mark until I was in yr11. I think homework has spiralled out of control, to be honset.

It could be that the 2 hours a night I have heard and seen quoted is an average though. What I mean is that some children will take 2 hours, some will take 1 hour or less to complete it and some 3 hours+?

Clutching at straws maybe...!!!

Neither of my kids have ever had anything even approaching two hours. Maybe my year six son, over a weekend. That would be a lot.

That's too long.

I haven't read the thread - but my tip is to multi-task must-dos - to claw back free time.

For example - I'll get a dry wipe board & ask the DC to talk me through what the answer is & I'll make notes for them. Then they just have to jot down the answer & can dash off. Spellings - we don't practice - she reads them twice to me on the walk to school
I also make heavy use of YouTube & iPad. If she's genuinely not getting something - I'll write a note to that effect - and sit her down for 10-20 min in front of a relevant YouTube video, or a relevant iPad app. Go back a few steps iyswim.

Didn't proof read - I should have said ' over dinner get a dry wipe board

refuse to do more than 20 mins. then write in her book , worked for 20 mins. if you dont do this the teacher will carry on thinking this is an acceptabvle amount. Play is very important at this age. more than homework

I seriously wish my DS (Y8) would get more homework - 10-15 minutes about four nights a week - I have complained to the school Grin (much to my DS's annoyance) but they say he is doing fine and can just read more or go onto the virtual website do to maths.

2-3 hours though is totally ridiculous for a Y3 - or any child.
