Moving to west Yorkshire - recommended schools pleasr

Hi
I'm Looking to move somewhere in west Yorkshire. Thinking either north Leeds/ Harrogate/ wetherby area.
Areas with Links to A1 would be ideal.

We're wondering which areas have good state primary and more importantly for us good secondary schools. Academic achievement and schools with well behaved nice kids are what we are after (if that exists!).
We know of Leeds grammar but that being private isnt really what we' want.

For my husband and I, we want an area with good local amenities, bit of countryside nearby (can be a short drive) and close to the A1. We probably have a budget of about £500,000 and would like at least a four bedroom, character-ish house with gardens- Harrogate doesn't seem to offer much in terms of gardens from what I've come across..?
Any recommendations where to even begin looking?!

Hi, not read all the thread but wanted to say that the schools where I live are excellent. Ossett, between Leeds and Wakefield. Daughter is about to start infants around the corner. It's in top 5% in country. My mum moved here earlier this year and loves how community minded it is. We are literally two minutes from M1 and 10 mins from M62 and A1. We love it here even though we're not keen on Wakefield. Brilliant schools though.

Oh, and due to the Wakefield postcode, lots of house for your money here. Silcoates School is great and Wakefield High School or Queen Elizabeth Grammar School are regularly near the top of the West Yorkshire tables.

Hairy, all the secondary schools you mention are fee paying though, original op was after state, All 3 of your listed schools are great in their own way, but of no use if ££ too much. State education in wakey is somewhat meh.

In Wakefield there are some bad schools. That's why we live in Ossett where the schools are all fab. And to be honest, with the money saved on a house round here, paying for private education would be an option. My daughter will go to Ossett or Horbury state schools, both of which are excellent. Her infant and juniors are OFSTED outstanding, and like I said, in the top 5% in the country. They are state schools, and rank higher on the league tables than private prep.

Otley is lovely. Good for a 1 and Prince Henry's is a good school. It is a wonderful town with good community and bags of character. Lots of lovely houses with gardens.

trice, but horrendous for a commute for OPs DH to castleford, and you forgot to add with a wonderful rugby club Grin

Hairy, sorry i meant secondary state education in wakey, plenty of good primaries.

HairyPloppins · 30/12/2013 22:32

Ooh, have you taught over this way too? There are some truly dire schools in Wakefield, but near us our secondaries are really good. Wouldn't live here otherwise. And would rather not live in Ponte. At all.

I think Tadcaster Grammar stopped being selective over 50 years ago - it's just kept the name for historical reasons.

We are lucky to have so many good/great secondary schools in the area.

Garforth is a good option. Close to A1 and M1, two stations on York-Leeds line and (if memory serves) the best or one of the best state high school in Yorkshire.

If you have daughters, make sure you look at The Mount in York. My daughters #lovethatplace
