Pre-school is full

The pre-school which feeds into the infant school I want DS to attend is full. I am so disappointed as I wanted him to begin school with children he already knows. Would hate for him to be the only one in the class who hasn't met some of the other children before.

Am I worrying too much about it? Does it make a big difference or not if they start school without knowing any of their class mates.

Are you on the wait list? It's entirely possible he'll get a spot closer to the start of term.

Nope - they wouldn't even take his name. Said that since funding had changed that it meant they were completely full all year from Sept onwards. Am now re-thinking where he'll go to school.

Yikes! What about for next year - any wait lists there?

Don't think it makes too terribly much of a difference. Well, it doesn't here, but this is a larger city w/a fluid population.

IME, both my sons knew a bunch of kids from preschool when they went to school. But when they got to reception, they weren't in the same class (split reception years).
They quickly made new friends and now hardly see their old 'best buddies'. I suppose it's harder for the first couple of weeks when they start school but many children will be in the same boat, not knowing anybody.

Children make friends really quickly, although my dd knew a few in her reception she didn't play with them but made new friend almost straight away.
So no I think parents worry about it more than the children.

How big is the preschool? Only the one that dd1 goes to only holds 30 children max and the school takes 60.

So your son may not be the only one is his class who didn't go to the preschool.

I would phone the preschool on maybe a monthly or so basis and check on availability - people move house etc so vacancies may arise.

DD starts a school in Sept and will not know anyone. I am concerned, but all the teachers tell me that she will be fine.
Fingers crossed eh?

am a tad confused, we had to have their names down for pre school earlier in the year here.

the nursery classes are mixed up anyway when they go into reception as not all the nursery children will go the school so would prob be a case of making new friends anyway

Thanks folks, Think I am getting in a stew over nothing. Have already found another pre-school which can take him and we are fortunate in our local schools - all are very good. Have calmed down a bit. Thank you all anyway.

Hi aragon ...
We moved across our city two weeks before DS started school so he didn't know a soul ... he was fine, settled in well and made friends easily.
