I want to start another thread just to find out what the daily deeds of a housewife are? Grin

They do, Huitre. Ducks, that is. I used to collect plant pots full from the veg beds and sling them over the wire to the ducks. Made us ALL very happy. Not the slugs, actually, can't imagine they were chuffed with the whole deal.

DownWithThisSortOfThing · 06/11/2013 20:44

Huitre trolls being predictable as ever then.

magnumicelolly · 06/11/2013 20:46

Ducks are most definitely not vegetarian! Nothing they like better than eating whole frogs!

Huitre · 06/11/2013 20:47

Whole frogs? Really? Wow.

VivaLeBeaver · 06/11/2013 20:49

Blimey. There was I thinking they ate corn and left over pasta and the odd cabbage like my chickens. Actually my chooks do get given the odd snail.

curlew · 06/11/2013 20:53

I want ducks.

ChunkyPickle · 06/11/2013 20:53

nooo champagne may not be veggie - something I learned when home brewing - loads of booze isn't veggie because the finings (to do with getting bits out of your brew) are often made from fish (somehow.. I'm foggy on which bit, and what the finings actually do.. it's been a while)

VivaLeBeaver · 06/11/2013 20:55

Yes, dh can't have some wine from the co-OP as it says on the label "made with fish finnings" or something. Can't believe champagne has fish fins in though.

Still haven't found out what the daily deeds of a housewife are.

Huitre · 06/11/2013 21:03

Well, I think there was ironing mentioned. I don't quite understand that one, I must say. I never iron anything unless absolutely necessary (weddings and funerals).

I think the fish finings might be to stop it being cloudy or something.

Antsmummy · 06/11/2013 21:06

My mums chickens steal mice from the cats..... Mouse flavoured eggs anyone? thought not

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 06/11/2013 21:07

I don't do the daily deeds of a housewife. :(

Kill me now.

VivaLeBeaver · 06/11/2013 21:08

Ironing! Shock

Say it ain't so!

Viviennemary · 06/11/2013 21:08

There's a burnt pan and hob thread. That was really interesting. These things have to be dealt with.

Squiffyagain · 06/11/2013 21:15

What is this 'ironing' of which you speak?

Blood used to be used in wine production, dontcha know? A random fact befitting of well educated boys.

AthelstaneTheUnreadyFucker · 06/11/2013 21:20

Isinglass (fish bladders) - used to clear wine. Make your own and you often don't need it (except for really hazy fruit wines such as plum) - nor the sulphites for preserving which tend to be what give people banging headaches after just one glass.

Terrible waste of a word. 'Isinglass' should be that glass made out of sand blasted by lightning, or a tower by the sea, or a greeting in Gaelic - something, anything, rather than ground up fish bladder Sad.

AthelstaneTheUnreadyFucker · 06/11/2013 21:22

Oh, yes, sorry - the daily deeds of a housewife seemed to include checking the taxes, if I remember correctly. Daily seems a bit... excessive.

Huitre · 06/11/2013 21:25

Isinglass totally sounds like something from Lord of the Rings. I think you can preserve eggs in it, too, which could be useful for the modern housewife.

Huitre · 06/11/2013 21:25

Not.

AthelstaneTheUnreadyFucker · 06/11/2013 21:30

oooh, eggs preserved in fish, let me at them...

SecretNutellaFix · 06/11/2013 21:33

I thought that about eggs. I read it in a novel written in the war.

I say Novel. It was a story in a well known long running school saga :)

Huitre · 06/11/2013 21:34

I think that might be where I read it too. Maybe.

Huitre · 06/11/2013 21:35

I actually can't remember! But I have a fondness for school stories so it could well be!

bsc · 06/11/2013 21:52

Not a school that relocated several times, was it? Smile

Huitre · 06/11/2013 22:01

Heh. Yes, I think that was it!
